Showdown in the Savannah*

Iwer and Machel in tight battle

Members of the protective services may have had their thoughts on the alleged threat to disrupt Carnival festivities, but locals were only concerned with one “war” — that between soca heavyweights Machel Montano and Neil “Iwer” George at the Queen's Park Savannah yesterday.

This sets up a keen contest between the two today as both vie for bragging rights to the Road March title.

Many had speculated that George's “Savannah” was out of the race once Montano's “Soca Kingdom” was released. But some music truck DJs sought to play both offerings as their masqueraders crossed the stage. No clear winner could be determined at the end of Monday's celebrations.
