The nomination of Justice Anthony Carmona as the next President of the Republic is a step forward for the political maturation of Trinidad and Tobago, president of the American Chamber of Commerce Hugh Howard said yesterday.
In a telephone interview, Howard said it was a "very good development" that both the Government and the Opposition had endorsed a suitable candidate.
"The election of President should be above petty politics...It will also help (Carmona) because when he makes a decision, he will not be questioned on political bias," Howard added.
President of the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers' Association Dominic Hadeed agreed, saying a non-partisan approach was in the best interest of the country.
"Justice Carmona has a good, able mind. His track record is strong and outstanding and will contribute well to the country; we like him," Hadeed told the Express yesterday.
AmCham's Howard added: "It might be a little early to make pronouncements, but based on his exposure we expect he has the appropriate background to perform the duties of President. He said he wants to make a difference, and we, the business community, will always endorse a President who considers part of his position to promote the country."
