THE People's Partnership Government is taking its time creating State boards because it is trying to avoid having people serving on more than one of them at a time.
This was the explanation given by Health Minister Therese Baptiste-Cornelis on Monday, when asked why the regional health authorities have been without boards since the May 24 general election.
"In the past, people have rushed to put boards together and there has been duplication and triplication of people on the boards, forming what we call 'super humans' and one of the things the Prime Minister has said off the bat is that she wanted to ensure that we did not create super humans," Baptiste-Cornelis said while speaking to reporters at the ministry's head office in Port of Spain.
All previous State board appointees have stepped down since the United National Congress (UNC) led People's Partnership Government came into office, as is the custom with a change of government.
As a result, audits and investigations surrounding the regional health authorities, including several former board members, have been put on hold.
The minister, however, said that "the information is there" and they will be given to the various boards once appointed.
"The boards carry the responsibility to those regional health authorities, there is not actually that much the Ministry of Health can do, so it has to be put into the boards' hands," she said
When asked how soon the new boards would be appointed, Baptiste-Cornelis said, "The Board Committee has decided to wait until all the boards come in and hopefully we can choose the best persons for the best boards."
