Cabinet has agreed to the construction of a port at La Brea, Transport Minister Chandresh Sharma announced yesterday.
Speaking at the post-Cabinet news conference at the Office of the Prime Minister, St Clair, Sharma said it was anticipated that the new port will be completed by 2015.
Some 200 acres of land will be sourced for its construction and expressions of interest will be invited for the project.
Sharma said it was projected that 300-plus ships will be visiting the country and the ports in Port of Spain and in Point Lisas will not be able to facilitate all these vessels.
Port business has the capacity to attract global investments, he added.
He said with the Point Fortin Highway there would not be any need to expand the water taxi service further South.
He said a customer paid $30 for a round trip from San Fernando to Port of Spain but this fare was subsidised by $200 from the government.
"I am sure you would not want us to subsidise any further," said Sharma.
Contacted yesterday about the announcement of the La Brea port, MP for the constituency Fitzgerald Jeffrey said many promises were made to the people of La Brea.
"I welcome these things but we have had so many broken promises over the last three years that it is unbelievable. I wouldn't miss one hour or one second of sleep over this thing until I see something really happen," said Jeffrey.
