Children's Life Fund chairman and finance expert Varun Maharaj is the new chief executive officer of the Trinidad and Tobago International Financial Centre (TTIFC).
He replaces Ram Ramesh who was not kept on at the TTIFC after his probation period on the job ran out last November.
In a statement, the TTIFC board of directors welcomed Maharaj "who has taken up the stewardship of the company, in its journey to make Trinidad and Tobago, the premier location in the Western Hemisphere for financial services".
The TTIFC is based at the International Waterfront Centre in Port of Spain.
It is a financial platform for international banks and financial institutions to establish local operations.
It was reintroduced by the People's Partnership government to attract foreign investment.
TTIFC chairman Franco Siu Chong said: "Mr Maharaj comes to us with an outstanding track record of business and portfolio growth in commercial and private banking and we believe he will be able to drive the strategic vision of the company and facilitate the achievement of its challenging mandate."
Maharaj holds a BComm (Hons) in Accounting and Organisational Behaviour and an MSc in Finance, and among other qualifications, he is a certified public accountant, a fund specialist, and holds postgraduate diplomas in Corporate Transformation and Company Direction.
