San Fernando taxi fares go up

By Carolyn Kissoon

The taxi fare to San Fernando Hill has doubled and passengers travelling to other parts of the southern city will now have to pay an additional dollar.

Ronald Gittens, president of the Around D' City Taxi-Drivers' Association, said taxi fares were increased on January 2.

"We have increased prices because the price of car parts have increased. We have to pay more to maintain our cars, so we had no choice but to increase prices," he said.

Gittens said travelling to San Fernando Hill was increased from $10 to $20.

He said from Mucurapo Street, Sutton Street and Rushworth Street to Ruth Avenue, Circular Courts, Scotland Drive Extension, Lydia Lane and San Fernando General Hospital casualty department there was an increase from $6 to $7.

From Circular Road to all back streets up to Mucurapo, Sutton and Rushworth streets, passengers will have to pay $6.

Passengers were also reminded that children three years and older are required to pay the full price.
