It’s the height of the Carnival season but some of those who haven’t yet had an opportunity to experience the fetes were in their glee during yesterday’s bMobile’s free lunchtime open-air soca jam session.
Bunji Garlin (Ian Alvarez) and Fay-Ann Lyons-Alvarez, alongside the Viking band, headlined the action at Woodford Square in Port of Spain yesterday, for the first in a series of live performances in bMobile’s week-long Soca in B Square concert series.
The lunchtime jam saw a large turn-out of spectators who cheered on the dynamic couple as they performed a string of old and new hits from their repertoire as well as offerings from the play lists of other well-known artistes.
Some in the large crowd seemed content to just sway and soak in the entertainment except for a contingent of wavers who gathered at the base of the stage.
Bunji was in rare form energising his fans with a lyrical freestyle session. Both young and old were thoroughly entertained when both Bunji and Fay-Ann went back in time with songs from some veterans like Sparrow, David Rudder and Bally.
Calypsonian Explainer further energised the crowd with his calypso hit “Lorraine”.
Earlier Woodbrook Secondary School rhythm section kept patrons entertained while traditional Carnival characters paraded around the Square.
Mayor Raymond Tim Kee opened the session with tips on how to be safe during Carnival.
A cheque for $5,000 was presented to the Special Child Foundation which will go towards its programmes. There will be other cash presentations during the week-long concert. Tidal Wave Aquatics will receive $10,000 and the top three participants in the Blink bMobile Art Competition will get gift certificates to purchase art supplies.
This year’s concert series promises to be more exciting with a bigger cast of artistes. Today’s cast includes Chutney Soca Monarch KI, Shal Marshall, Jaiga, Jo Jo and Mr Famous, who will all be backed by the A-Team band.
