Sweet victory for Tobago Chalkie

By Elizabeth Williams Tobago Bureau

The 2013 Tobago Calypso Monarch is Alex "Tobago Chalkie" Gift, with his song, "A Spranger's Story".

Gift's calypso told of poor black men who use drugs daily and wash cars for a living, at the Crooks River area in Scarborough.

Tobago Chalkie walked away with a first prize of $100,000 on Wednesday evening at the Scarborough Esplanade.

Hundreds came out to dance, play and dingolay as the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians Organisation (TUCO), in conjunction with the Tobago House of Assembly (THA), held the 2013 Calypso Monarch.

Thirteen calypsonians participated, vying to dethrone defending champion Henson Wright, "Calypso Prince".

The new Tobago Monarch was congratulated by TUCO chairman Ainsley King and THA Culture Secretary Dr Denise Tsoi-a-fatt Angus.
