The Lidj Yasu Omowale Emancipation Village opens with grand pageantry

Hundreds came out on Tuesday for the opening of the Lidj Yasu Omowale Emancipation Village, Queen’s Park Savannah, Port of Spain. The event produced by the Emancipation Support Commitee featured a rich blend of cultural presentations that reflected the diverse artistic expressions of the Afro-Trinbagonian community. Artistes performed folk songs, dance, calypso, steelpan music and more to a very appreciative audience.

Among the artistes performing was Brother Valentino who recently returned from a visit to Zimbabwe were he was received with great reverence by the people of the African state for which he years ago recorded a song of encouragement titled, “Stay Up Zimbabwe” during the civil war. Also performing was the Mighty Gabby who is considered to be a national treasure in his native Barbados. The veteran calypsonian delivered a first-class performance on this his much anticipated visit. Also on the lineup were Black Stalin, Karega Mandela, Karene Asche, Jeunes Agape, Alana Sinette and the St George’s College Music Ensemble.
