There is now yet another band for mas lovers to look at as they shop around for a band to play with for C2K14. Passion last Sunday at the Queen’s Hall car park in St Ann’s unveiled its eponymou%s debut presentation. The band offers 10 sections each representing elements that drive human passion. The gathering of mas enthusiasts that included sports personalities, people from the entertainment arena, politicians, prominent businessmen, applauded loudly as the models showcased the costume designs.
“Carnival comes but once a year,” said the band’s spokesperson, Sheena Tang Nian, “and once a year the emotions we hold in our hearts pour onto the streets. As masqueraders from all walks of life and from the far corners of the world come here to live Carnival and to be Carnival, we celebrate that love, that desire, those emotions and that passion.”
Other mas bands launching last weekend were, Dream Team and YUMA. Hosting its unveiling at the YMCA headquarters, Wrightson Road, Port of Spain, Dream Team presented 12 sections of its 2014 offering, I Am with a cast of young fresh models and its “experienced in-house team” of designers. “It’s our best presentation,” said band leader, Paul Singh. “The team has really worked hard and it’s come together really nice. We’re definitely going to make a statement on the road come Carnival 2014.”
Singh explained that the I Am presentation is a declaration of self and an effort to encourage masqueraders to be themselves on the road.
“Every living thing strives to find a place in the universe,” he said, “and the universe accepts every living or non-living thing and gives it a place. This is the basis of existence. As the most evolved living things on the planet our freedom of thought allows us to be what we want to be. We make our presence felt by standing up and announcing who we are. This is the philosophy of Dream Team’s 2014 presentation I Am.”
Meanwhile, over on the western side of the Hasely Crawford Stadium, the YUMA faithful gathered to witness its 2014 presentation, Cirque. Described on its website as “a perfect Synergy and depiction of Cirque du Soleil and the innate ingenious flair of Yuma”, this collection aims to “capture the splendor and pure ecstacy of two of the greatest shows on earth”. In their adaptation of Cirque du Soleil, the YUMA committee invites masqueraders to “be a part of the most raved about theatricals in the world” as it embodies 13 characters from various Cirque du Soleil productions.
