Your living room is one of the most important rooms in your home. It’s the place you go to relax and kick back after a hard day’s work. For some it’s their sanctuary and the place where they’re supposed to feel comfortable — which is why it’s so important to have a living space that you are happy with and can enjoy.   Do not settle for a dull, dark or uninspiring living room. Nothing can be more fascinating than the idea of brightening up your living room area.  Today, I am going to talk about a few tricks that you can use to brighten up your space without breaking the bank or taking up hours of free time.

Here are a few fuss-free ideas for creating the living room of your dreams.

ADD VASES AND FRESH FLOWERS

To make your living room brighter, place vases of colourful fresh flowers on tables throughout.  Adding a touch of nature refreshes and adds energy.  A trip to any of our many local florists, along with a few vases, are all you need to give your living room a much needed facelift.  However, those of you who wish to cut costs have the option of using realistic looking silk flowers to match the vibe of the room.  The advantage of using silk flowers is that they do not need to be watered and can last a very long time.

ADD PAINT

Change the feel of your living room by painting the walls a fresh new colour.  Pick that vibrant colour you always liked, and if you do not want to paint all of the living room walls, just paint one to give you an accent wall.  When using vibrant colours, please note that if your living room is on the smaller side you can choose one wall to paint so the new colour will not be so overpowering.

ADD CUSHIONS & WINDOW DRESSINGS

Put new cushions on your sofas, loveseats and chairs.  Consider buying or having them custom-made in bright colours, in keeping with your colour scheme, to give a punch of colour to your new living room. Change your window dressings; if they are dark and heavy drapery, you may want to change to lighter fabrics, brighter colours, bold designs or sheer curtains.

ADD ART & SCENTED CANDLES

Decorate your living room walls with art, family photos or photos that reflect your personality, which will give your space a new and brighter look.  Scented candles and candle holders add that extra touch of luxury to your living space.

ADD RUGS

Please do not neglect your floors…yes your floors…because we often do.  When brightening your living room, try using an area rug that brings attention to the floor.  You can select a solid, bold colour or a patterned one to suit your taste.  You will be surprised how a simple rug can illuminate a room.

REMOVE CLUTTER

Clutter makes any room appear smaller and darker.  Clearing away all unnecessary clutter really opens up the space.  Take a look around the room and decide what pieces you should get rid of, in order to give the room a more spacious look.  I know how easy it is, with our busy schedules, to become complacent and not realise junk and clutter is piling up in the space.  Using small baskets or racks to hold newspapers and magazines helps to minimise the clutter.

ADD LIGHT

Choosing stylish, modern table and floor lamps for extra lighting in your living room can brighten your space.  If you want to do something more permanent, consider adding recessed lighting to the ceiling.  Please note that if your living room walls are in a dark colour, you will need more light to keep the room bright than you would with lighter wall colours.

Not every room needs a total makeover. The above simple, fun and often inexpensive changes can make a big difference in your home.  Enjoy!
