The Express walked through the always busy streets of Port of Spain in search of just the right clothes that says, “I’m a Trini,” just in time for today’s Independence Day celebrations.
From dresses to skirts, pants and jeans, red, white and black are colours that would be in high demand, said store retailers on Wednesday.
Whether you decide to do something bold or something a little more subtle fashion wise for today, knowing your body type will help you in finding the right outfit and the perfect fit that will complement your shape, said style consultant at 212 Location, Jewelle Moore.
“For women with an hourglass figure, pencil skirts and peplum tops help accentuate the waist and hips and celebrate your curves in the right way. For pear-shaped women, long skirts and fit and flair dresses, flatter the figure and help to de-emphasis any problem areas. For women with a rectangle figure or ruler shape, it is all about creating the illusion of curves. Flair skirts and peplum tops would suit this figure best.
Women who are more along the lines of an inverted triangle where the top half of their body is bigger than their bottom half should avoid turtle necks and too many ruffles around the neck since this will just make your top half even bigger.
Try wearing flowing skirts and tops that will open up the neck area without showing too much cleavage. For full-figured women, pencil skirts are the best since it conforms to your body and creates a wonderful silhouette. Avoid horizontal stripes since it would make you seem wider. If you really want to do stripes, try vertical stripes since it does the opposite,” Moore said.
Red, white and black are strong colours on their own and can be difficult to wear all at once. However, you can still show your patriotic spirit if you could find the right balance, Moore said,
Black and white is very trendy right now and incorporating a few red accessories into your outfit can help you achieve that Independence Day flair without being too literal, she added. “All you need is just a hint; be it a pair of red shoes, handbag or jacket, you can easily take your outfit from day to night or from casual to evening,” she said.
Moore noted that fashion is all about expression and expressing oneself through clothing. However, she said, some people may find styling and fashion a bit challenging but if you keep these essential items in your wardrobe, you will find that you will always be fashion forward: a black dress, a pair of jeans, casual pants, flowing dress and a well-structured jacket.
