IN an effort to lend a helping hand to citizens in need, a new non governmental organisation has been formed, involving students of the University of the West Indies (UWI).
The organisation is called the Students’ Association For Egence Relief (SAFER).
President of the group Hakeemah Abdul-Latif, is a second year medical student at the Mt Hope campus. The vice-president is Joneille Johnson, who graduated with a BA in Communication Studies last year and Shauntaye-Marie is the events coordinator and an International Relations student.
Last month, the group hosted its first national campaign called Give in. Donation kits were placed at several stores, groceries, Japs outlets and banks encouraging citizens to give monetary contributions.
The money collected will be used for the upgrading of orphanages throughout the country.
Johnson said, "The number of orphans living in Trinidad and Tobago has constantly fluctuated, as has the interest and efforts put into helping this community. SAFER is determined to help several orphanages around the country."
Since the group's registration at the St.Augustine campus in September last year, there have been several fund raisers, including a bake sale and a poetry competition.
Johnson said, "This time the young people are not waiting to be told to do better, but are taking up the initiative themselves. The campaign is spearheaded by a group of young people from UWI St. Augustine that eager to make a positive change in their society, and they are confident that the public will be willing to join them."
The next planned fund-raiser will be geared towards helping students who may be in need of university or school related finances.
