Mayo's musical treat

By Nikita Braxton-Benjamin

SONG, dance and parang made for a true Christmas experience for scores of children who attended the annual Christmas tree lighting event in the heart of Mayo recently.

Talent from the children of the area came in the form of Christmas music from pannist Rachel Dieffenthaller, dances by Shenika Baptiste and Lykeisha Charles and songs from former Digicel Rising Star 2011 first runner up Reena Ramsaran.

Ramsaran sang a melody of songs as the lights on the three Christmas trees and the angels and star were illuminated.

The Holy Spirit Movers and parang groups La Familia de Musica and Los Ninos de Subero also entertained the crowd.

An impromptu talent session from children between the ages of four to ten years also brought smiles to those who attended the event.
The show was hosted by various cultural groups in the village which also donated gifts to the children. Member of Parliament for the area Surujrattan Rambachan also sponsored items for the event.
Hampers were also given to families in the area who recently lost loved ones.

Relatives of Rakesh Sinanan, 18, who drowned last month on his first trip to Caura River and mother of four Arlene Nicholas who died from cancer days before the event collected the items.
