Members of the Trinidad and Tobago National Committee on Reparations (TTNRC) as well as nationals of the African diaspora are set to benefit from the knowledge and experience of the co-Chairperson of the Caricom Reparations Commission (CRC) Dr Verene Shepherd as Emancipation observances continue this month.
Dr Shepherd, who is also the Chair of Jamaica’s National Commission on Reparations, arrived in Trinidad and Tobago for a five-day visit last Friday and she will be here until tomorrow. She is a much sought after speaker, who has presented numerous seminars, conference papers and delivered many public lectures locally, regionally and internationally on African and Caribbean studies.
During her stay in this country she will attend the 9th meeting of the Trinidad and Tobago National Committee on Reparations today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, level 14 of the Waterfront Complex, Wrightson Road, Port of Spain.
At the meeting Letters of Investiture will be presented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Winston Dookeran.
It was at the Caricom’s 34th Regular Meeting in July 2013 in Trinidad and Tobago where it was agreed that each Caricom member state should establish its own National Committee in Reparations. Each committee is mandated to document the effects of European Genocide against the indigenous inhabitants of the region, the slave trade in and the enslavement of Africans, and the colonisation of the country.
