THE Southern Elegance - a cruise vessel that sails only
from San Fernando, last Friday added a sushi bar called Afloat,
to its attractions.
Linda Ramcharan, a director with Associated Marine Services - the
company responsible for the vessel - said it was her son
Kerry Ramcharan, who came up with the idea to have a floating sushi bar.
The design for the bar was
completed in April 2011, months before the vessel first set sail in
Trinidad last November.
The Southern Elegance is a former casino
gaming boat and can hold up to 325 passengers.
Ramcharan said " Sushi is becoming the new fast food. It is a healthy
choice because the portion size is small and the meal is well balanced. From
the sushi, you can get carbohydrates from the rice and protein from the fish
and shrimp. You also get fats from your fish and shrimp."
She said the signature meal would be rolls and nigiri sushi (thinly sliced fish
placed over rice).
Rolls would cost between $75 to $85 for eight pieces, she said.
At the opening, the California roll usually made with cucumber, crab
meat and avocado, was the most popular dish.
Dishes would be prepared by a local sushi chef, Ramcharan said.
The bar, which can accommodate up to 50 persons, will be opened from
Wednesdays to Saturdays during the hours of 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. There is no
entry fee to the vessel.
For additional information Ramcharan can be contacted at 223-7245.
