THE University of the West Indies (UWI) has embarked a free lecture
series to educate communities about various issues through its Department of Behavioural Sciences.
On Saturday, lecturers and students will be participating in its second lecture event at the La Brea Community Centre.
The theme is " Health Care and Social Problems in La Brea."
Topics to be discussed will be unemployment, social protest, cancer, sports and health.
There will also be the launch of a social capital register said Amanda Thomas, one of the coordinators.
She said, " The social capital register is basically keeping a record of life skills that members of a community have. Some might have family skills, cooking and other types and we will use that in the communities. There is a need to generate the use of those skills for growth and development."
Thomas said the first of such community meetings took place in January in Couva and organisers learned from the mistakes of hosting that event.
The Social Capital Lecture Series is headed by Dr Ronald Marshall, senior lecturer and head of the Sociology Unit.
The series at La Brea is expected to begin at 1 p.m. Thomas said communities such as Fyzabad, Point Fortin and Cedros will also be able to participate in the series.
