During the past few weeks, several themed events were held in the lead-up to Easter. On April 6, a Fun Day was hosted by Vanessa and Friends at St Mary’s Anglican Rectory grounds in Tacarigua.
For the last decade, the event has attracted a large number of families to the all-day extravaganza, which included games, treats and goodies, an Easter egg hunt and the traditional Easter bonnet competition.
Vanessa Hart said the event was designed to give back to the community. She said the growth of the event has seen various children’s homes participating, as well as neighbouring communities coming out to enjoy the free event.
“We started with about 30-something children and now we have over 200 children and families coming to participate. It has really grown.
“It didn’t start as an Easter event. We just wanted to give back, but we started to include the Easter egg hunt and the Easter bonnet, and I think people gravitate to these things, especially during this season,” Hart said.
Hart said the event is funded, for the most part, by a committee made up of friends and family.
“I just wanted to do something to give back to the community and I formed a committee with some of my friends and family, and we decided to just give back. We started the planning process early in the year; from as early as January we started various fundraisers.
“Now that it has grown, we have one or two sponsors on board, which we are grateful for. I actually had to cut off the participants this year for the Easter bonnet competition. This event has grown in popularity over the years. This was one of our biggest years, and we are looking forward to next year,” Hart said.
