the sting of insecticide prices

The soca parang by local entertainer Sprangalang goes: ’We drinkin’ flit an’ all.’

But it might actually be cheaper to drink scotch these days.

Within the past month, the prices of popular aerosol insecticides for household use have soared past the $20 mark.

These insecticides are a staple of many homes where flies and mosquitoes are sometimes unwelcome visitors.

Also, in this time of a dengue virus threat, the vector for which is the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, spraycan insecticides are as important in some homes as are fire extinguishers.

Always the priciest of the lot, the Baygon brand has gone from around $25 for a large can to around $29, at the large supermarkets checked by the Business Express.

Of the cheaper brands, Bop has gone from around $17 for a large can to about $24 and Det, from about $18 to $24.99.

The prices of some mosquito coils have also risen by up to 70 cents bringing the prices of cheaper brands into the range of about $4.50 per pack.
