A TOTAL of 14 cases were heard over the weekend at the first ever sitting of the Port of Spain Magistrate’s Court at the Hall of Justice.
On Saturday, nine cases were heard by Senior Magistrate Lucina Cardenas-Ragoonanan in the Port of Spain Third Court.
Among the cases was that of Ron Cox, who was shot by police on April 13 (Easter Monday), after he and his alleged accomplice were confronted by West End officers after the two allegedly broke into a Diego Martin home.
The man, Augustine Woods, was shot in the abdomen and pronounced dead on arrival at the Port of Spain General Hospital. Cox, 41, of Pregnancy Lane, La Puerta, Diego Martin, was also shot in the melee. He was charged with possession of house breaking tools, namely a pick axe, and other offences.
When Cox, who pleaded guilty to the charges, appeared before Cardenas-Ragoonanan, he was denied bail on all charges, which included house breaking and possession of a knife with intent to wound. He was remanded in custody and the matter transferred to the 11th Court today for facts and sentencing.
Cox is accused of stealing over $3,000 in valuables from the home of Douglas Camacho, of Manning Street, Diego Martin. Charges were laid by ASP John Richardson of E-999.
Yesterday, five persons also appeared before Magistrate Avason Quinlan, one of whom had a pending warrant since 1998.
Andre Walcott was arrested at the Piarco International Airport on April 17 after he was deported from the United States for gun-related offences. He will reappear in the Port of Spain Magistrate’s Court tomorrow. The matter for which he had a warrant issued for him was not revealed in court.
