Floods maroon Marabella residents

Pensioner Krishna Dassarath was mopping up flood waters from last weekend’s heavy rainfall, when the rains again came yesterday.

Within minutes the flood waters rose to almost three feet, covering the steps to his home. Dassarath was among several people in Tarouba Settlement, Marabella, who were marooned in their homes.

’We have a river nearby which has turned into a drain and we cannot do anything about it. So every time it rains we have to face this same situation,’ he said.

The roadway outside his home was impassable and motorists sought alternative routes to get out, Dassarath said.

The midday downpour also caused flooding along the Solomon Hochoy Highway, near Claxton Bay, causing a massive traffic pile up along the south-bound lane. Many motorists parked their vehicles along the shoulder and waited for the flood waters to subside.

And the tunnel which connects Charles Street, Gasparillo, to Mahogany Avenue was again flooded. Residents parked their vehicles along Charles Street and waded through the water to get to their homes on the other side.

There were also reports of flooding in Morne Roche, Gasparillo, Union Road, Marabella, Piparo, Esmeralda and Williamsville.

Up to late evening motorists were unable to pass along the roadway leading to Piparo, the Express was told. In San Fernando, commuters lined the streets waiting on transportation to get home. Up to late evening, scores of school children remained stranded near taxi stands along High Street.
