Gordon still in talks over media committee

Government is still pursuing former CCN chairman Ken Gordon to head a proposed committee on media standards.

Public Administration Minister Kennedy Swaratsingh has now been called in to join Information Minister Neil Parsanlal to encourage Gordon.

In an interview with the Express yesterday, Gordon confirmed he received the terms of reference for the committee from Parsanlal last Friday.

’I got the terms of reference. I referred it back to the Minister with my comments. I would rather not say any more at this time and I would refer you to the Minister,’ Gordon said.

He did, however, reveal that the document was returned to Parsanlal on Monday and he met with Parsanlal later that day.

Contacted for comment yesterday, Parsanlal confirmed he did receive the terms of reference Gordon returned with the written comments, as he said they are continuing their dialogue on the issue.

’And based on the comments, I have expanded the discussions to include the Minister of Public Administration,’ Parsanlal said.

He described his discussions with Gordon as ’cordial’.

In an article published in the Express last Friday, Gordon said he would not join any proposed committee on media standards that would be in conflict with the freedom of the press.
