US President Barack Obama will be staying at the Hilton Trinidad while here for the Fifth Summit of the Americas.
Minister in the Ministry of Finance, Mariano Browne, confirmed last night that Obama, who arrives tomorrow, will be staying at the only upside-down hotel in the Caribbean, which is located in St Ann’s.
In the past, the hotel has been graced with VVIPs like former secretary general of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles, his brother, Prince Edward, and former South African president, Nelson Mandela.
When asked about Obama’s scheduled stay at the hotel, Hilton Trinidad general manager Ali Khan said, ’We don’t disclose the privacy of our guests, it’s our policy.’
Khan did indicate that the hotel was almost totally occupied by summit delegates, but did not confirm if it was the American delegation.
’Every space, every corner is occupied at the moment,’ said Khan.
’I think it’s a great feeling to run a hotel which is full and to see the hotel renovated. The hotel is a great asset of Trinidad and we have been on a lease agreement for the last 47 years with Government.’
In 2004, Government commenced a renovation programme for the hotel. The first phase was completed in 2006 and the second, which was an overhaul of the existing rooms, started in 2007 and is now completed.
’The renovations are completely finished in the original side of the hotel and the 260 rooms are beautifully attired,’ Khan said.
’It’s modern yet the feel of the island has been kept. The décor is suited to the island. The comments from the guests so far are very superb. The newer side, which has roughly 180 rooms, will be completed before the second summit.’
The third phase of the renovation project will begin on May 1.
