Caricom Secretary General Dr Edwin Carrington yesterday declined to comment to statements attributed to Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez which said that he was coming to veto the Final Declaration for the Fifth Summit of the Americas.
’I have no thoughts on that because I gather that it is not true. That is what I was told by someone-that it is not true,’ Carrington said, adding: ’I would not comment on something before I could establish that it is a fact’.
He, however, confirmed that Caricom leaders will meet today at 9 a.m to prepare for the Summit and for a number of bilateral meetings. Carrington also confirmed that there would be a meeting between US President Barack Obama and Caricom leaders. ’It looks as if it would be Friday night,’ he said.
Caricom leaders would also meet with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper tomorrow at 8 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, the main venue for the Summit.
