The funeral service for music producer, Sheldon ’ShelShok’ Benjamin, will take place on Monday at the Good Shepherd Anglican Church, Freeling Street, Tunapuna, from 3 p.m.
Cremation will follow at Belgrove’s Crematorium in Tacarigua at 5.30 p.m. Benjamin on Monday succumbed to Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, a form of cancer that attacks the lymph nodes.
The Lifeline Committee, which comprises several friends of Benjamin and some artistes he had worked with, who came together to raise funds to assist him with his medical expenses, will contribute to meeting the funeral expenses.
The committee on June 7 hosted a benefit concert at the Zen nightclub, which, according to a source at the club, raised just a little over $100,000. There was also an account set up at Republic Bank for persons interested in making contributions to the fund that had been set up by the Lifeline Committee. Proceeds from the concert were also to be donated to the Cancer Society.
One of the region’s most prolific and innovative music producers and DJs, Benjamin was largely responsible for the chart success of, among other artistes, General Grant, Kindred, Homefront, 3Canal, Machel Montano, Rocky and others he produced hit singles for. Benjamin took Bajan soca artiste Allison Hinds to global recognition when in 2005 he produced the song ’Roll It’ for her.
At the time of his passing, Benjamin had produced more than 307 songs, the majority of them hits, that still command attention years after their release.
In an interview with the Express before he passed away, Benjamin, who began his career as a DJ and skilled master mixer, commented, ’As much as I love producing my passion is being a DJ. That is what I really love and have always wanted to be growing up.’
Fellow producers said that being a DJ contributed to Benjamin being a great producer, since he knew what would make a song a hit and draw listeners into the music.  Â
