Gypsy: Panday's plan for surrogate MPs 'laughable'

Opposition MPs Jack Warner and Winston ’Gypsy’ Peters have said they are not bothered by the UNC executive’s decision to appoint ’surrogate MPs’ for their constituencies.

On Thursday, Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday said the executive decided that he would be the surrogate MP for Warner’s Chaguanas West constituency, while Harry Partap would be the surrogate MP for Peters’s Mayaro seat.

Couva South MP Kelvin Ramnath was mandated to look after Tabaquite MP Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj’s constituency.

’Whatever Mr Panday says or does now is of little interest to me. Mr Panday is free to do what he wants,’ Warner said yesterday.

He said, however, that in two weeks, he would be opening an office in Panday’s Couva North constituency.

’So while he is taking care of mine, I will look after his people,’ Warner said, adding that now, for the first time, Panday’s constituents would be better served.

Peters also dismissed the move, saying, ’That is vacuous talk, it doesn’t make any sense.’

He said Partap needs a management committee of his own.

’Mr Panday cannot look after himself. Mr Panday needs to look after himself, can’t you see Mr Panday is looking very frail?’

Peters said it was ’laughable’ that Panday wants to be the surrogate MP for Warner’s constituency.

Maharaj is currently out of the country and could not be reached for comment.
