Warner 'to file counter-charges'

Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner says he intends to file counter-charges against members of the UNC executive, in the wake of disciplinary charges laid against him.

’I have reels and reels of what they have said against me. When I lay a counter-charge, I can show them the tapes and articles,’ Warner told the Express on Sunday.

Last week, Warner was slapped with 25 charges by the UNC executive, and was called to explain his conduct.

Tabaquite MP Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj and Mayaro MP Winston ’Gypsy’ Peters were also served with charges.

The trio have fallen out with the party’s leadership over the failure to hold internal elections.

Warner wrote to Panday and executive members, threatening legal action as he argued that he has been discriminated against, as Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday was never asked to explain his conduct when criminal charges were laid against him.

Warner has since written to Panday, stating that he will not answer any of the 25 charges unless his concerns as to whether the UNC executive is lawful in the first place, as party internal elections were long overdue, are addressed.

He further requested that the executive provide all the documents and materials that led to their making the charges against him.

Warner said that the charges laid against him were absurd. ’It’s an embarrassment to know these guys are my Parliamentary colleagues.’

The following are the 25 charges laid against Warner by the UNC executive that he has been asked to explain:

1. On or about November 28, 2008, in an interview with the Express newspaper at Parliament building you said words to the effect, that the UNC A is dormant and that there is dire need for internal party elections.

2. On or about November 30, 2008, at the Island Finance Building, Chaguanas, whilst speaking at your constituency’s first annual dinner, at which the press was present, you said words to the effect that the party should not be led by one man and his dog.

3. On or about December 11, 2008, you said to the Trinidad and Tobago Express words to the effect that apparently that there was one law for Basdeo Panday and one law for everyone else in the party.

4. On or about January 6, 2009, you told the Newsday words to the effect, that it was a fight to the finish, that certainly Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj and you will not lose the fight, that some people will have to accept that change is inevitable, and that there was no way that you were prepared to continue with the UNC party if it was business as usual.

5. On or about February 8, 2009, at Gaston Court, Chaguanas, while addressing a meeting organised by the T&T Civil Right Association at which the press was present, without the approval of and/or consultation with the National Executive of the UNC Party, you outlined a bailout plan for the Hindu Credit Union, implicating the UNC and knowing the same to be false.

6. On or about February 15, 2009, you said to Newsday words to the effect:

a. that there was dictatorial rule within the UNC, that you and Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj would continue battling for change to ensure that the party wins the next general elections;

b. that you and Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj believe that MPs, members of the National Executive and the Parliamentary Caucus lacked courage to stand up for the rights of members and supporters of the party when they are threatened with dictatorial rule.

7. On or about March 9, 2009:

a. on a radio programme you falsely stated words to the effect that the Members of Parliament for Caroni East and St Augustine had been secretly canvassing members of the Syrian community for change of the Leadership of the UNC;

b. in an interview with Newsday you said words to the effect
