Protester turns herself in
...fined $1,000 after baring breasts to cops

'made mistake': Crystal Henry

The woman who bared her breasts to police during a protest in San Fernando last week said yesterday she was forgiven by her children.

Crystal Henry said her seven- and nine-year-old children told her, ’Mummy, don’t study it. God will forgive you,’ when they saw the images on television and in a newspaper.

Magistrate Taramatie Ramdass yesterday fined Henry $1,000 on the charge of obscenely exposing her person. ’I have given you half the fine. The next time you will pay the full amount,’ Ramdass said.

On the charges of using obscene language and disorderly behaviour, she was placed on a $5,000 bond to keep the peace for two years. Should this be breached, she will return to court for sentencing.

’The bond is more effective in helping to remind you to control yourself,’ Ramdass said.

Henry turned herself in to police yesterday morning and was charged by Sergeant Bertie, of the Mon Repos Police Station.

A warrant had been issued for her arrest following the incident last Thursday, when police officers, responding to a protest at Mon Repos, were approached by Henry, who shouted, cursed and demanded to know the whereabouts of her arrested husband.

The 25-year-old geriatric trainee apologised for her actions, saying she was frustrated. ’I made a mistake. It is not a normal practice. This is the first time it ever happened,’ she said.

Henry’s husband, Leibert Bonterre, whose arrest triggered the protest, was last week fined $9,500 for resisting arrest, assaulting police officers and marijuana trafficking.
