UNC spares Jack; Ramesh, Gypsy not so fortunate

OUT OF COUNTRY: Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj

Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner has been spared yet another time by the UNC’s disciplinary committee.

However, fellow dissidents Tabaquite MP Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj and Mayaro MP Winston ’Gypsy’ Peters were not so fortunate.

The UNC Executive at its meeting at Rienzi Complex, Couva, decided last night that Maharaj and Peters would be sent to the party’s disciplinary committee as they failed to attend the meeting yesterday to explain their conduct and answer charges laid against them.

Maharaj, who is currently on vacation in the Cayman Islands told the Express last night, ’Let Mr Panday and the Executive continue to make a mess of things and when I return I will respond to them.’

The Executive had issued letters to Warner, Peters and Maharaj outlining a number of charges against them, which included bringing the party into disrepute and voting with the PNM in Parliament.

In response, the trio sent letters indicating that they could not answer the charges unless proper documents were supplied to them including the minutes of Executive meetings. They also threatened legal action as they argued that the Executive was unlawful and could not take such action against them.

Some 25 charges were slapped on Warner. In his letter to the executive he explained that he would be out of the country and stated dates that he would be available.

Panday said last night that because of Warner’s willingness to meet with the Executive he would be given the opportunity to be heard and then the decision would be made as to whether he would also be sent to the party’s disciplinary committee.

When asked if the Executive discussed whether UNC councilors Felisha Isahack and Narsingh Rambarran who voted for the ousting of Suruj Rambachan as Chaguanas mayor was discussed, Panday said, ’We’ll deal with the most important ones first’.

If found guilty by the party’s disciplinary committee, of which Rambachan and Chaguanas deputy mayor Orlando Nagessar are members, Maharaj and Peters can be suspended or expelled from the UNC.

Trinidad voters are in big, big trouble. The only hopeful alternative to the "do nothing" PNM, is always in endless anarchy. The UNC is like a losing sports team. They have a team of great athletes, compared to the other team(PNM), but for some mysterious reason, they put themselves in such a deep slump, they never make the playoffs - Canada

Makes perfect sense...they still need Jack's money, so you can't look a gift horse in the mouth...
individuality Posted: 2009-08-07 11:25:00 AM
As a Trini living in the US, I am really discouraged that one of the major political parties seem to make the governance of our nation look sub standard. I was particularly disappointed to learn that voting for a decision or bill proposed by the other party is a disaplinable offence. I thought politicians sought the best for the people even if, your party didn't come up with the idea..... can someone answer me

In Trinidad all the politicians are good friends, so anything goes. Some of them even have the goods on each other
Stay out Posted: 2009-08-07 3:24:00 PM
I read these comments every day, when true Trinadians write, regardless what they say, I read, either approve or dissapprove, but when we have so called Trinidadians, living in Canada or The US, writing, it a real joke, these people deceided to Run away to the " White man Country" as they say, to seek money and fame, why these people still in Foreign lands, giving there opinion. Trinidad you don't want to help, you don't want to live in you home, so stay out of our business, seek the " The white man" business. If you not prepared to return and make a difference, put up and shut up.
