ALL IS NOT LOST
Tourism Minister on possible visitor fallout after attack on Brits

All hope is not lost for Tobago tourism.

Tourism Minister Joseph Ross admitted yesterday the upsurge in crime in this country was having negative repercussions for Trinidad and Tobago’s image as a safe tourist destination.

But he was encouraged by the fact that United Kingdom visitors currently in Tobago are saying they would return, notwithstanding the brutal attack on British couple, Peter and Murium Greene.

He also expressed Government’s ’faith that our law enforcement agencies will use the full force of the law to apprehend the perpetrators.’

Ross, speaking at yesterday’s post-Cabinet press briefing, at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann’s said Government was doing everything in its power to address the crime situation. He said the National Security Minister planned to establish a police unit in Tobago to deal specifically with tourism. Sources said the unit would be in place by October, along with a Police Marine Branch. Ross said there was a need for tourism policing.

He said the Government had noted with concern the travel advisory updates from the United Kingdom and Australia following last Saturday attack on the Greenes.

’We expect that it would have an impact. What we are trying to do now is ensure that we have adequate security systems and to give the visitors the assurances that the possibility of people committing these crimes and getting away would be reduced significantly and in fact eliminated,’ he said.

Ross said the Ministry of Tourism was liasing with the National Security Ministry, High Commissions and the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) to ensure that the concerns of potential travellers were being addressed.

’Confidence in tourism industry will take several years to build and can be lost in a matter of a day,’ he said. He said in 2005 the Tourism Intelligence Agency did a report on the United Kingdom travel market which indicated that the perceived danger of crime and terrorism was the second most important consideration of persons when deciding on a tourism destination.

Ross noted that Britain was one of the largest tourists generating markets and the United Kingdom outbound market ranked fourth in the world in terms of tourism spending. The United Kingdom cruise market was the second largest in the world (after the US) and was one that Trinidad and Tobago intended to maintain and increase, he said.

Reiterating Government’s condemnation of the ’horrendous crime’, he said members of the THA, Ministry of Health representatives and himself have visited the Greenes at the hospital. Ross said he prayed with Murium Greene on Sunday. He said Government was making arrangements for the relatives of the Greenes to be brought to Trinidad and Tobago and was also arrangement counselling services for them while they are here.

Meanwhile, he said, his Ministry would continue market this country in the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe. The Tourism Development Authority and the THA would have to revise some of their marketing approaches, he said.

Asked to respond to the view that the crimes may be motivated by the resentment against tourists buying up lands in Tobago, Ross said: ’I cannot respond to that school of thought. I have no idea as to the motive behind it (the attack on the Greenes). No idea at all,’ he said.

well Mr. Minister Posted: 2009-08-06 8:44:00 PM
the visitors who are currently in Tobago, what you expect them to say? They will say positive things for their safety....
you are kidding Posted: 2009-08-07 00:00:00 AM
tell me he is not serious? did he take a survey of people in the UK? I happen to live in the UK and the travel agencies are warning us NOT to go to Trinidad and Tobago, tell me where he got his facts from?
Minister for Nonsense Posted: 2009-08-07 02:35:00 AM
Just who is the minister trying to fool? Tobago is not a safe place for tourists. The island is very beautiful but unfortunately the attitude of many of its residents towards foreigners is disgraceful. They want their money but in return are resentful and rude. The men are disrespectful to European women. Perhaps it is wrong to blame people for being ignorant but when a minister of government talks nonsense and supports the ignorance, you have to despair. However, rest assured, thousands of us who know the real truth will continue to spread the word and warn people to stay away from that violent place until genuine change takes place and not just 'ol talk.....!
Didn't help Posted: 2009-08-06 11:50:00 PM
It certainly didn't help that Supt Nadir Khan was quoted in the British media saying 'this is another serious attack on tourists'. Makes it seem like it happens all the time!
Re: Didn't help Posted: 2009-08-07 2:05:00 PM
Well Yes...it happens all the time. Are you working with the police or the government? Because to say otherwise it has to come from one of those useless, careless bodies. The police and government don't solve anything. When a crime happens, it's all so HYPED up about how much they are doing to bring these criminals to justice but it soon fades until another one happens and another and so on. Do some backtracking and see how many of these crimes are solved, certainly NONE that I can remember of in the past little while.
Good Grief! Posted: 2009-08-07 05:39:00 AM
It is the usual thing. A horrible crime takes place and the authorities bring out their drums, tassas and pipes and proclaim no stones will be left unturned until the culprit or culprits is/are caught. Instead of a systemic approach to stem the general malaise, they pinpoint this solitary incident and pat themselves on their backs if by chance they catch him/them. Good luck or should I say good grief, Mr Ross?
Tobago Attack Posted: 2009-08-07 05:53:00 AM
John Ross must be living on anther planet. Who is he ?.Which hole did he come out off. He should do the right and resign without further delay.
All is not lost, but... Posted: 2009-08-07 00:44:00 AM
I am a UK national and returned to England from a 3 week trip to Tobago and Trinidad just yesterday. We were in Trinidad when the attack happened, and in Tobago for the first and last 4 days of our trip. My wife is half Trinidadian, and so I have now visited the islands about 5 times. Although I love my visits, and we've had such a good time - including in Tobago visiting the Maria wedding festival - if I am honest I would not be traveling to T&T any more if I did not have family there as an incentive. My worry for T&T is that while both Trini's and Tobagonians quibble over which island the "baddies" are from - trying to shift the blame - visitors will look on incredulously at the shockingly poor levels of safety for tourists. I grow increasingly concerned that simply not enough effective action is being taken to improve apprehension and prosecution rates. Each visit I hear new horror stories of kidnappings, rape and mutilation of visitors (and nationals) that I simply don't feel safe even in some of the hotels, but especially when staying with friends in their holiday homes on more remote parts of the islands. At a time when I have also noticed a real improvement in facilities for tourists - and on the whole, an improved level of service in shops and restaurants - all this great effort will go to waste if the authorities do not seize control of the situation and improve the way they apprehend the dangerous few who are spoiling it for all. My sense is that although T&T may have oil to rely on at the moment, it will need a vibrant tourist economy in the future if it is to diversify and maintain its wealthy status once the reserves begin to run dry, The poor level of security many visitors to the island experience is a crime in itself.
seriously Posted: 2009-08-07 04:48:00 AM
the problem is not only the crime, its the lack of effective police. When the police are corrupted, who's going to watch them?! Trinidad and Tobago needs to re-vamp the police entirely.
All is not lost Posted: 2009-08-07 05:49:00 AM
I hope the results are far different from those obtained in the killing of the Swedish couple last year and the hundreds of unsolved local deaths. All is not lost for the spindoctors but not the victims.
True Posted: 2009-08-07 05:56:00 AM
The minister is exactly right..all is not lost, the thing is theres nothing left
Foreign Lives. Posted: 2009-08-07 06:17:00 AM
It is a pity that the full force of the law cannot be used when a local is murdered. Local lives do not seem to be as important as foreign ones. When will our citizens demand that we deserve the best in everything - education, justice, services etc? When will the authorities decide to use all resources for the benfit of its citizens. The self esteem of the nation needs to be considered, borne in mind and raised. Rise up people Rise up.-
Re: Foreign Lives. Posted: 2009-08-07 1:45:00 PM
......because Tourism is more important that the citizens of T&T. Hope EVERYONE gets it!!
All is not lost? Posted: 2009-08-07 06:59:00 AM
I beg to differ I think thats sad for the British couple in Tobago. As for it being in the new in London it was all over Skynews yesterday. so sad
let's prayer Posted: 2009-08-07 04:50:00 AM
let's all say a prayer to save the nation today at 12noon .Peace is the answer .
All is not lost Posted: 2009-08-07 04:07:00 AM
All is not lost. Apprehend what perpetrators? Trinidad and Tobago police service don't find anyone if they do I will congratulate them soon there will be no tourism in once sweet T&T.
ALL IS NOT LOST Posted: 2009-08-07 08:30:00 AM
Are these people kidding themselves or what. No crime in Tobago is ever solved, and this one will never be solved. Law enforcement in T&T just do not know how to apprehend a criminal. After all, how big is Tobago, that someone could comit such a crime and get away to it, whether he went to Trinidad or is still in Tobago. It is just a shame the way the law enfocement operates in T&T. That laid back attitude of the Police Force is what the criminals know and what they are using to ply their trade and get away. A couple was hacked to death in Bon Accord Estates, no one have been apprehended. A woman who operated a hotel was killed in Bon Accord, no one have been apprehended, and all these crimes have been comitted more than a year ago. A young life guard was gunned down not too far from the Police Station, no one have been apprehended. Having said all this, how can tourist ever feel comfortable in Tobago, it is better that they do not visit until the Government have shown that they have taken steps to stop crime and to apprehend the criminal should a crime be comitted.
All is not lost (tourism industry) Posted: 2009-08-07 08:31:00 AM
Your political reporter enquired whether visitors were being attacked because they were buying up land in Tobago. But isn't it also possible that these crimes are being committed by individuals (not necessarily Tobagonians) who have been repatriated to a land that they do not know (because of some felony committed in their adopted homeland, such as Britain, Canada or the US) and are now exacting revenge on these foreigners for their deportation? These are hostile, alienated individuals who are certainly not Trini to the bone, not even Trini at the skin level!!
Catch Them Posted: 2009-08-07 09:52:00 AM
Who in their right mind would be planning a vaction to tobago now? If these people are caught then one may reconsider going there, but untill they are how could anyone encourage or consider going. Its all well and good to say you must be careful but these people were attacked in their home not while wandering in some dangerous area. I have had the good fortune to travel to a great many places in the world and I have always taken the time to do careful reasearch on my destinations. This kind of incident would certainly give me pause to think about visiting tobago
Already Visitors are deciding not to come Posted: 2009-08-07 09:54:00 AM
I already know of a group of visitors who are thinking to rescheduling their holiday here because of this attack - of course people won't want to come somewhere where tourists are attacked with no apparent reason.
All is not lost Posted: 2009-08-07 11:38:00 AM
Too late! Crime is taken too lightly in Trinidad and Tobago. Why not have the Regiment handle the crime in Tobago? The police department needs to have more experience in solving crimes. Taking bribes and corruption in and out of government are not very helpful.
Paradise lost Posted: 2009-08-07 10:24:00 AM
All is not lost, says Tourism Minister Joseph Ross. That's what he would like to believe. Ever heard of Paradise Lost, Mr. Ross? The brutal attack on the Greenes is but one of the many violent attacks on people in the "paradise" isle. Visitors and locals have experienced the fury of these criminals. Remember Mr Ross, the Swedes, the British women who were raped while their husbands were made to watch, the Dopsons and countless other crimes? Perhaps you were in dreamland. And your sidekick Paula Gopie-Scoon was a pathetic picture as she spoke about crime in Tobago and UK advisories, during a press conference. Get real, Mr. Ross. You and your political colleagues must face reality. That Paradise is lost and can never ever be regained.
promises and more promises Posted: 2009-08-07 06:45:00 AM
I don't understand why the British Couple's incident must finally put a dent on the unnecessary crime in Trinidad and Tobago. If the government would begin hanging criminals, criminals would think twice before they committ crimes.
Ross should resign Posted: 2009-08-07 11:00:00 AM
He should resign because he is speculating on what to do after the fact. He did nothing the first time and encourage the second. TNT need competent personnels who know what to do to prevent odd situations.
All is Not LOST Posted: 2009-08-07 08:26:00 AM
Oh really! Ask the travel agents who are canceling trips to T&T left and right. Wake up, Mr. Ross! Brenda, Edmonds, WA
ALL IS NOT LOST Posted: 2009-08-07 11:33:00 AM
LOL...Keep dreaming! Trinidad and Tobago is just another backward, crime infested island(s) in the Caribbean; where criminals roam freely without hesitation or repercussion. Your police force is a joke.
No confidence Posted: 2009-08-07 08:06:00 AM
so full of nonsense
All is not lost Posted: 2009-08-07 12:39:00 AM
Again everyone knows the problems in T&T but no one is offering any solutions except FIRE the goverment. What did the last goverment do? Besides nothing like the present one. We need solutions people. We need new ideas. We need some youngblood. T&T is still the best country in the world to live but we need some fresh mind running the country. Stay and help instead of running to Canada and other countries. We need your help folks.
All is not lost Posted: 2009-08-07 09:03:00 AM
Please don't be afraid to publish the truth: ALL IS LOST! Tobago is unsafe especially for European tourists. What about that statement is so hard to understand. Tourists should stay away from Trinidad & especially Tobago until attitudes towards them are changed...which will never happen. Tobago people are hostile towards their guests. I am a native and have witnessed this first hand. Tourists remain at home and live to tell the tale.
All is not lost Posted: 2009-08-07 2:21:00 PM
Brother Ross, take a trip abroad before you make such comments. Even dual citizens are fearful to return home or to come home for a vacation.
All is not at Lost Posted: 2009-08-07 1:13:00 PM
Trinidad and Tobago....needs to get tighter with their security system. Have Metal Detectors all through the ferry system...b/c these criminals are coming and going like they want. Making Tobago a mess..... Just imagine a place that used to have one murder a year... now it's up to 10!!!. NYC
All is not lost Posted: 2009-08-07 10:45:00 AM
All has been lost since your party gained power mr minister...........
Tourism Posted: 2009-08-07 1:43:00 PM
I am a Trini living overseas and came back once a year until5 years ago-sad to say I now go to other Islands for my West Indian fix--scared to visit
Is all over Posted: 2009-08-07 2:50:00 PM
I would like for Trinidad to had a travel advisory for countries that our people visit and warn us about traveling to countries where there is alot of crime and terrorist attack. As fast as something is on the world news update the travel advisory for our citizens.
carriage before the horse Posted: 2009-08-07 12:24:00 AM
While Manning and Panday focusing on each other with petty politics, and cannot get past their personal squabbles the country falling apart. remove them both and restructure the police force. Hold the top brass accountable, if they fail to make a difference remove them. I bet you will start seeing some accountability. why create a tourism task force now, where is the insight to act before stuff happens?
insignificant security Posted: 2009-08-07 4:31:00 PM
We know one fact. The police and intelligence capability is not working. I was in TnT some time ago and ask a police office in POS for directions to the MIn. of Agriculture's office and his reply was, "go buy a map" Go figure
All is not lost? Posted: 2009-08-07 6:07:00 PM
I am a Trinbagonian living in Canada. I have not been home in more than five years. I am now afraid to visit Trinidad and Tobago. Once my beloved homeland, it is no longer somewhere I would want to visit. The crimes are getting more and more hidious! What is happening to my people? So sad and disappointing it brings tears to my eyes and worry to my heart for my family living there.
