ATM bandit shot, leg amputated

A man who spent his evenings robbing users of an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) was shot in the right leg when undercover police officers attempted to arrest him.

The gunshot wound to his right knee was so severe that doctors at the San Fernando General Hospital amputated the leg yesterday. He will be taken to court in a stretcher, if necessary, police said last night.

The 23-year-old suspect was identified by an image taken from the bank’s closed circuit television camera (CCTV).

The incident happened along Mucurapo Street, San Fernando, around 5.30 p.m. on Thursday.

The Lowkie Trace, Penal, resident was spotted outside the Scotiabank ATM along Rushworth Street, San Fer- nando. The law enforcement officers followed him to Mucurapo Street, where they approached him, police said. The suspect whipped out a knife and threatened to use it on the officers.

The man was shot once and remains under police guard at hospital.

The suspect will appear before several identification parades before charges are laid, investigators said.

Police had almost a dozen reports of people being robbed at the Scotiabank ATM within the past month, it was learned.
