ACTING Commissioner of Police James Philbert does not believe Tobago has sunk into an area of heavy criminal activity.
’I have noticed that some reports have labelled Tobago a crime haven.... I think it is unfortunate that we can make such a statement. Tobago, for the most part, remains peaceful,’ Philbert said at yesterday’s K-9 Academy Graduation in Tucker Valley, Chaguaramas.
He was referring to comments made following the brutal chopping of British couple Peter and Murium Greene in Tobago last Saturday.
Philbert admitted there have been incidents which led to the police increasing their resources on the island.
He said further resources would be given to Tobago in the future but believed the island remained fairly tranquil.
’Tobago, for the most part, is a peaceful place, and we intend to keep Tobago peaceful,’ said Philbert.
Philbert stated he was ’quite enthused’ with the progress of investigations into the Greene incident thus far.
There have been five reported homicides on the island for the year.
Four of them were committed within the first two months of the year.
