Suruj: Navas out of touch

Former Chaguanas mayor Surujrattan Rambachan has said that, if he had remained in office, no workers would have been put on the breadline.

Rambachan was responding to claims by the newly appointed Mayor, Natasha Navas, that he was partly responsible for the retrenchment of 54 contract workers at the Chaguanas Borough Corporation. Many of those workers were litter wardens.

Rambachan said of Navas’s statement: ’This just goes to show the lack of knowledge of how the system works. She is saying that I was supposed to break the service, but the objective is not to put people on the breadline.’

Navas told the media that Rambachan was aware of the corporation’s constraints but refused to take action to assist the workers.

Rambachan said when the corporation’s budget was reduced last year, $250,000 was taken out of contract employment. ’But I found $209,000 from other areas and put it in that area, so that no one would be sent home. Had I been there I would have ensured that at least the litter wardens and hand cart workers remained. This means that you are taking a clean town, which I left, and making it into a virtual dump,’ he said.

Rambachan said it would be a tragedy if the workers were to take up positions in other corporations. ’These are well-trained people and we were lucky to have them in Chaguanas. Within two years the litter wardens had 1,700 cases before the court and now these matters would be thrown out. There are many ways to keep these people and I think it should have been exploited,’ he said.

The workers were told last week that their contracts would not be renewed because of financial constraints within the corporation. Several retrenched workers met Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday last Thursday during his two-hour-long visit at the corporation.

Looks like you are really enjoying life in Toronto, this is our battle over here, but thanks anyway

Way to go Navas! Make your mark. Send people home when the country is in a recession. Turn honest hardworking people into potential criminals. Well done mayor!
Navas Good Looks Posted: 2009-08-10 03:39:00 AM
Navas only got the position because she pretty. But remember, look is decieving. The cookie is already starting to crumble. Rambachan worked in that same office with the same AC unit, drapes, etc. Ms. Navas needs to show some positive results and prove herself first before she can have a palace.
The Mayor Posted: 2009-08-10 09:42:00 AM
Mr. Rambachan. There is only one Mayor. Let that person handle the job. The situation is what it is and unless you can help, move out of the way. Regards
No Rambachan, you are wrong because you was voted out and Navas is in office. Posted: 2009-08-10 08:58:00 AM
When would these people like Rambachan and Panday see the light at the end of the tunnel and respect the people's choice. The people have spoken and accept it, you all are history. we have a new, young, bright uncorrupted Mayor and let her do her job.

Sure let her do her job, Mayor Navas will send the Borough of Chaguanas skyrocketing into debt before Christmas, with her personal spending, just wait and see
Suruj you missing the point. Mayor Navas is in touch and you is OUT. Posted: 2009-08-10 09:04:00 AM
Suruj, stop complaining like Panday because you embarrassing your self further. The entire country knows that Mayor Navas is the new Mayor of Chanuanas because you was vote out so that makes her in touch and you are not.
The "cry wolf" generation? Posted: 2009-08-10 10:32:00 AM
I don't believe him. I think Rambachan is part of a generation that is accustomed to blaming other people for problems. Look at Panday, I've lost count of how many times he's cried wolf with the accusations of conspiracies and personal vendettas. He may be right, but I simply don't trust him if he's one of Panday's cronies.
Suruj: Navas out of touch Posted: 2009-08-10 09:19:00 AM
Pple like you do'nt like to see young pple strive.Give her a chance, then and only then can we speak. It's a shame ole die hard like you and many others, will not let go of the rein so that someone younger can take over. Look ahead and stop burying your head in the sand. Time for change throughout the system for a better country. OAP'S

For all of the believers of this new messiah, I mean Mayor Navas, wait till Chaguanas becomes in a state worse off than Laventille
navas out of touch Posted: 2009-08-10 10:36:00 AM
Suruj was the Major of the Corporation for the past six years, so howis it that natasha is responsible for the "financial constrains" in just a few weeks...Please suruj thisblame the new person politic can't work...
Suruj: Navas out of touch Posted: 2009-08-10 09:48:00 AM
Is there not a proper "hand-over" system for the successors of these positions. Come on, Mr. Suruj, stop playing games and assist Ms. Navas in her inductrination process so that there can be a smooth transition. This occurs in businesses, why can't we practice good ethics and do the right thing. We need to encourage our young people, they are our future, we are not here forever you know, there must be sustainability, or else we would have failed!
Re: Suruj: Navas out of touch Posted: 2009-08-10 2:35:00 PM
There are certain times when you can gamble on a young person, at this point in time, Chaguanas is in a state, where it is in desperate need of a charasmatic and experienced leader, qualities none of which Navas possesses
Suruj crying sour grapes Posted: 2009-08-10 2:01:00 PM
Suruj stop crying you are no longer the mayor, your term as mayor was without success, you were a self seeker, you enjoyed nice things which was not necessary, panday, nagessar and yourself are you own demise...move on the bus has stop it is time for you, panday and nagessar to get off....NY Trini/Us
