36 HOUSES HIT
Heavy rains wreak havoc

RARE SIGHT: A twister caused a stir among residents of East and Central Trinidad yesterday when it was spotted around midday. The Met Office said It did not cause any damage to property. -Photo: Siva Singh

Thirty-six houses were affected by heavy rains over the weekend, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) said yesterday.

In a ’Situation Update’ released at 12.30 p.m. the ODPM said the homes fell within four municipalities and all cases had been attended to by the respective authorities, including the Fire Service, regional corporations and the Ministry of Social Development.

In areas of South Trinidad, residents were repairing roofs and cleaning their damaged homes yesterday as well as counting their losses.

Residents of Mahabalsingh Branch Trace, Navet Village, Rio Claro, gave up Sunday lunches and family time to repair their roofs which had been blown away by high winds.

Gina Ramkissoon said she was lying on her bed when she heard the loud crashing sound. ’It happened in a split second. Half of the roof was ripped off from my house. Several trees were also uprooted,’ she said.

Ramkissoon yesterday said she and her 17-year-old daughter Yudika were still traumatised by the incident. The family of five lost electronic items and appliances and a wall under the house was also destroyed.

Six other houses in the area were similarly affected.

The walls of Cecil Persad’s wooden home were torn down by the strong winds. Eleven people were affected in his family and he estimated damage at $80,000.

As residents tried to salvage their belongings they spoke yesterday of their fear of being trapped as the only bridge leading out of the village was on the verge of being covered with water.

’We don’t expect this water to go down until the next two to three days,’ Ramkissoon said.

In Barrackpore, residents were still marooned in their homes as floodwaters covered roads yesterday.

Residents were seen wading through knee and waist-high water to gain access to their houses.

But what do they do? Posted: 2009-08-10 04:15:00 AM
What is the ODPM really doing? It seems that it has taken up the function of reporting instead of helping the unfortunates. I hope I am wrong.
Heavy rains wreak havok...but no severe weather bulletin from Met Office. Posted: 2009-08-10 05:38:00 AM
Where is the Met Office when we need them? All this rain and wind and tornado, but no warning from the met office!! I am totally disappointed.

Change is Here! Posted: 2009-08-10 08:51:00 AM
Our local clime has already changed. With the occurances of tornadoes it means that our Local Met Offices is in great need of an upgrade to in order to detect early signs of these phenomenons so that mitigation would be quick and efficient.
Re: Met Office Posted: 2009-08-10 12:58:00 AM
The Met Office did in fact forecast showers and thundershowers (www.metoffice.gov.tt). However, it is not the duty or jurisdiction of the Met Office to report damage. That is the privy of the ODPM and Regional Corporations. Meteorologist, Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service
Re: Change is Here! Posted: 2009-08-10 09:14:00 AM
Yes, it might not be the job of the Met Office to report on damages but it would good for citizens to have an idea of what they might be up against. If this is now to be included in our local climate (and i hope that is not the case) then just like our local forecast of the weather then it would be nice to know that the conditions favourable for the formation of these are present. Hope we have the kind of technology for this type of detection...
disasters Posted: 2009-08-10 10:12:00 AM
people start praying...its a sign of the latter days....STOP blaming one another. This is a natural disaster ...we have no control over.
Local; Government? Posted: 2009-08-10 10:33:00 AM
No wonder the PNM is afraid to face Local Government Elections for four years in a row. They should be ashamed. The Prime Minister's drapes alone could help all those families. Then ha claims he is a man of God!

Come on people there must be a 100000 houses in Trinidad and you all panic because 36 houses got hit by high winds and rains that are common in the caribbean. I am sorry for the home owners who lost property but its the price you pay for living in paradise.
Re: 36 houses hit Posted: 2009-08-10 10:57:00 AM
What an insensitive comment. I'm guessing yours was not one of the 36. That is 36 families we are dealing with- where is paradise for them? I lost my home last year in the floods and the very little help the government promised is yet to come one year later.

I am amazed that some people are saying a tornado is exciting news.I live in what we call tornado alley in the U.S. and a tornado is nothing to be excited about, they are very dangerous and unpredictable. So please people take this very seriously,a tornado is nothing to play with.I guess you partying people in T'dad will be having a tornado party next.
