Warner to the rescue
...MP gives $309,000 to rehire retrenched Chaguanas workers

Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner has handed over $309,000 to the Chaguanas Borough Corporation to cover the salaries of the 54 contract workers who were sent home by the Borough last week.

At a media conference held at the Mayor’s office in Chaguanas yesterday, Warner said Mayor Natasha Navas wrote him last week asking for assistance in dealing with the matter.

Warner said he ’found the money’ and delivered a cheque to the corporation that will allow the workers to be re-employed for two months-August 1 to September 30.

The workers-mostly single mothers with short term contracts-were last week told by the corporation that their contracts would not be renewed because of financial constraints at the corporation.

Mayor Navas and former mayor Suruj Rambachan have blamed each other for the retrenchment.

Navas declined to comment yesterday about the source of Warner’s money.

In a press release yesterday, the UNC’s political leader Basdeo Panday called on Warner to use $300,000 of the $30 million that Warner ’admittedly received on behalf of the party prior to the last general elections’ to pay the workers.

Asked where he got the money, Warner said, ’Don’t worry where the money came from, just where it is going.’

He said as a private citizen he could not pay the workers directly and had to give the money to the corporation.

Deputy Mayor Orlando Nagessar said he was grateful for the money.

Nagessar said councillors were willing to give up some of their stipends to see how the workers could have benefitted.

He said Panday wrote to Prime Minister Patrick Manning asking for help, but there was no response.

Big Move! Posted: 2009-08-10 11:23:00 PM
This man is a true man for positive publicity, now where he got the money, who knows. I still think we need fresh young faces in TnT politics and get rid of these geriatric old farts. Now the new Mayor, time will tell, lets see how she performs.
Warner vs Panday - Posted: 2009-08-10 10:18:00 PM
It is unconscientionable to see grown men in the public's eye slinging mud at each other. Shameful. What a message you are sending to the youths of this nation! While you are both rolling in the mud, slinging accusations at each other, our country is going down the toilet - You both are giving Emperor Manning all the space and opportunity to do as he pleases. We do not have an Opposition in this country. What we have is a bunch of men justling for positions. You Mr. Panday served your country well, you are no fool, so don't behave like one. It is said that with age comes wisdom - use it. You Mr. Warner is a world recognised man with the ears of world's Heads of State. You know what 'gentlemanly conduct' is all about - so exercise it. You can choose to wrestle in the 'mud' or rise above it. Mr. Warner ifyou are in a position to assist, do so with dignity, and let the slings and arrows go over your head, and just smile - grin and bear it, for your people. You can do that, can't you. You are both put on Notice 'Behave with Dignity' from now on, if you have the interest of this country and it's people as your uppermost priority.
WELL WELL Posted: 2009-08-11 02:57:00 AM

Found the Money... Posted: 2009-08-11 02:15:00 AM
In my next life I hope I come back a Politician. Just an honest one with no hidden agendas. Somehow, somewhere I think serving people and making self sacrifices on their behalf would be a noble thing to do....or is it not?...Lloyd C. Johnson, US Army Retired, Germany
SANTA CLAUS WARNER Posted: 2009-08-11 03:05:00 AM
Santa Claus Warner has come to town. Ho Ho Ho! We need to give Mr. Warner a red, white and black suite and a pair of black Christmas boots. This is not right, it is unethical. Since when has Mr. Warner become the local treasury for the area! People, beware of Warner, money cannot buy integrity. Mr. Panday did not buy his, he earned it. As to the Honourable Navas, I wish you well. But all the prodigal children would soon realise their mistake and run back to the UNC. It is the only hope for this country. Mr. Panday may not be around then, but then there is always the Good Lord above to ask forgiveness.
Where the money came from Posted: 2009-08-11 02:25:00 AM
The police should investigate where Jack got the money. We know he can buy out everybody but the funds must be legally earned.
Rescue Posted: 2009-08-11 06:55:00 AM
The public has the right to know where the money came from. We are tax payers and not fools.
hmmm Posted: 2009-08-11 07:00:00 AM
Big deal. Sometimes you hang your trousers up and it feels good to find small change in it after some time has passed.
Jack you tell him Posted: 2009-08-11 03:22:00 AM
I believe that Panday has finally met his match. At least Jack willing to put his money where his mouth is, can Panday say the same? Panday is not known for his selflessness or generosity. He can certainly throw words, though.
Mr. Warner. Posted: 2009-08-11 08:40:00 AM
Thank you.
A politician like Jack who buys people and their vote I would not trust him. Posted: 2009-08-11 09:05:00 AM
Why did Jack Warner take this long to send the cheque? As soon as Panday, says he going to write to Manning, Jack get the idea, why not buy over the people. Don't be fooled people this money was not given for your interest, it was given to promote Jack's interest. I wonder what is Jack Warner next agenda? Did Jack get the money from Manning for his faithfulness in supporting the government? Or is Jack just trying to buy his way around and give Panday a hard time. I would not trust any politician who uses money to buy the people for their votes. There are a lot of people who have lost their jobs, I guess since Jack is sharing out the dollars; a lot more people need it. If he buys the entire Island or 80% of the people, and he is about to take over the UNC, I think the party may have a good chance to win the elections.
Bail Out Posted: 2009-08-11 04:23:00 AM
How proper is it for a privete citizen to 'GIVE' money to the Mayor's office?
Warner to the rescue Posted: 2009-08-11 04:38:00 AM
Warner you made a good political move. This could propell you to leader of the party.First you have to remove Bas.
Jack's "found money" Posted: 2009-08-11 10:06:00 AM
Is this allowed? Do I smell conflict of interest here? Hmmmm.
Don't ask Don't tell Posted: 2009-08-11 09:39:00 AM
"Asked where he got the money, Warner said, "Don't worry where the money came from, just where it is going."" What do you mean "Don't ask..."? What if you are money-laundering? It is being used for public funding...then we have the right to ask and to know.
Jack's "bailout" Posted: 2009-08-11 06:40:00 AM
So this is Jack's strategy for governance: Select an incompetent puppet, and then throw his personal money at the problem when they mess up. It may work for a while in managing a borough but this little window into Jack's political leadership abilities leaves a lot to be desired. What happens, God forbid, if he ever became PM? Does he have enough personal money to bail out an entire country from bad decisions and incompetent ministers? At least for his $309,000, the media will show images of him being a "hero" to some poor women, which will ironically win him political points among some parts of the electorate.
yuh see man!! that is man!! Posted: 2009-08-11 10:49:00 AM
Where's big mouth Panday???
Patrick Manning Had No Response! Posted: 2009-08-11 09:55:00 AM
I am not black, indian, white or chinese, but from this report, it proves once again PNM is the worse political party to lead T&T. There was not even a response from Patrick Manning because he is probably too busy building another tower.
Jack you are the people's man Posted: 2009-08-11 4:16:00 PM
Mr. Warner....Good job you really are a true person who help the unfortunate in society...you are right Bas should assist as you did...time for Bas to go as long as Bas is there COP will not talk UNITY with you....NY Trini
who fooling Who? Posted: 2009-08-11 3:21:00 PM
Imagine the Mayor cannot pay 54 workers so she sent them home. Then one week later she find the money and rehires them. All in the full glare of the media. This whole thing is clearly orchestrated to bring attention to a few. Jack you had me on change up to that point.
