Anger erupts in Argyle
Family, residents claim police arrested wrong person...

'FREE CLINT': Residents of Argyle, Tobago, during their fiery protest yesterday in support of Clint Alexis. -Photos: ELIZABETH ALLARD

As 25-year-old Clint Nigel Alexis of Breadfruit Alley, Argyle, appeared in court yesterday morning facing two charges of the attempted murder of British couple Peter and Murium Greene, villagers in Argyle were protesting and calling for him to be freed because he was innocent.

Protestors came out shortly before 7 a.m, preventing the smooth flow of vehicular traffic.

The six-foot Alexis appeared before a Scarborough Magistrates’ Court magistrate dressed in a cream suit. His lawyer Larry Williams said his client was in urgent need of medical attention, and since being in custody from Monday he was hit about the head with a gun butt and his ribs with a baton.

Williams continued: ’My client has old injuries to his foot and police officials mashed his foot several times causing swelling and pain. His medication for his foot injury was taken away from him.

’While in custody from Monday to Wednesday of last week my client received no food until Thursday when officer Denoon also known as Simple C gave him some Royal Castle. On Friday the same officer brought bread for him.

’The Trinidad police and them told my client to sign a document which was never read to him. His signature was affixed, however my client cannot read.’

Williams said his client was in custody since Monday, August 3, and last Friday when he was charged with attempted murder, his client was told the statement he signed was a confession to chopping the Greenes on August 1. In addition it was told to the court that Alexis started vomiting on Saturday when he was given food by the authorities.

State Prosecutor William Davis denied that Alexis was beaten by police with a gun butt or baton, and everyday he was fed.

’No officer aggravated any injury to the accused foot, and no officer took any medication away from Mr Alexis. Alexis never complained of feeling nauseous,’ Davis said.

Senior Magistrate Annette McKenzie was told by the prosecution that there were no notes to present to the court, only one statement. A copy of the statement was made available to Alexis attorney Larry Williams.

The police were told to take Alexis to hospital to be medically examined and to present the medical certificate at the next court hearing of August 20. Bail was denied until the victims in the matter are out of danger.

Family members who gathered outside the court and included Christopher Alexis, the father of the accused, said they were leaving the matter in the hands of God for justice to be served. Aunt of the accused ,Jenny Henry, said her nephew would be freed.

’I have faith that the criminal justice system would be solved. I have faith that my nephew would be released from this distress, because I know he is innocent,’ Jenny Henry said.

Family spokesman Busby Trotman said outside the Scarborough court yesterday that the wrong man was brought before the courts. He offered a speedy recovery to the Greene family, and stressed that the brutal attack should not be condoned.

’The real perpetrator of this crime is out there somewhere. What we can say is in an effort to appease the international media and some local entities, a scapegoat was necessary. The true criminal is not Mr Alexis but the criminal justice system,’ he said.

Meanwhile scores of villagers in Argyle came out to protest for the release of their fellow villager, whom they described as cool. The area turned into a carnival-like atmosphere, with food being cooked and music echoing through the streets.

Close friend Akino Bascombe said he was with Alexis during the time the Greenes were chopped.

’Well me an he was together right through, whole day around 2 p.m. we were in Roxborough, we went and buy food,’ he said.

Alexis is a labourer with the Division of Infrastructure and Public Utilities.

WRONG MAN ARRESTED Posted: 2009-08-10 11:01:00 PM
Somehow I believe that the wrong person was indeed arrested here. The limp esp. the villagers must know the truth. The real killer/s are still out there. Please leave this young man alone and find the perpetrators of this brutal crime

It's disturbing reading this article. Why was this man allegedly put under duress while questioning? He is only a suspect and should be treated in a humane manner. How do you train your recruits? If these allegations are true, his family should ensure it never happens to another person when in custody. We hope he is the right man and is not being used as a scapegoat only to say someone was caught.Let him take A Lie Detector Test and ensure it's someone who can be trusted. this is the 'third world' and Posted: 2009-08-11 03:55:00 AM
a disgrace given the reporting and declaration of 'jungle' activities. sunshine masks the true horrors of life on this island which is dominated by 'trini' dealings and corruption, all the way through. if this chap has NOT done it, and chances are he hasn't, accountability is going to spread like wildfire throughout the caribbean which is now right back where it started, coconuts and pirates. Heed the advisory white 'foreigners' because danger can and must be averted by going somewhere else.
Really? Posted: 2009-08-11 05:20:00 AM
Well residents, if you all are so sure that he did not do it then tell the world who did. If not then shut up and let the legal process continue, if he is innocent it will be proven for there will be a lot of holes. It is time villagers stop protecting the perpetrators of crime and start turning them in. WHO DID IT? TELL US!!! Via Email.
Clint Alexes...Scapegoat? Posted: 2009-08-11 05:49:00 AM
Is this "Statement" the only evidence the police has to convict this young man of this crime?..I hope not, These Trinidad police are real professionals, how many days did it take them to find this "criminal", they just walk into Tobago and solve a big International case, i guess they up for promotion now!I'm glad to see the people of Tobago standing up for themselves. Think about all the young people in the past the police have done the same thing to,& destroyed their lives. In 2009 the police of Trinidad & Tobago have to resort to beating a young man to sign a statement in order to solve a crime. I wonder if they ever thought that, as his villagers are saying, he cannot read, how can a man who cannot read sign a statement? i'm sure the police will come up with a great story for the court. The only pieces missing from this play is the politicians making a big press conference to say things are back to normal in Tobago.....the criminal has been caught.......my prayers go out to the Alexis family. a solve a big crime, that makes the Tobago Police look real good!
Argyle anger....... Posted: 2009-08-11 06:48:00 AM
Whether a suspect is innocent/or guilty, law enforcement has no right to abuse their power and torture them. This abuse of power is historical in T&T and they should cease & desist from doing so. Trini, FL
ANGER IN ARGYLE Posted: 2009-08-11 06:08:00 AM
Can't even read this entire depressing piece. These police grab a man who they think they can force into admition of a crime he did not commit, by abusing him with their gun butt, and batons. All in the name of shame face to the Tourist industry, (the rest of the World). See if they try to quickly solve the next murder of a National. An embarassment of the law. KS
re: attack on British Couple. Posted: 2009-08-11 07:35:00 AM
I do hope Trini Police officers have enough evidents to prove their case. since this a crime that the World is watching they better come good, otherwise this would be proof of how illeterate trini police officers realy are.
And while all this is going on the true killers are out there. Posted: 2009-08-11 06:30:00 AM
Yes, we still need permanent police in each village with proper communication equipment. While you could beat a lil man here and a lil man there, the criminals are out there operating freely and probably laughing at we.
Wrong person? Posted: 2009-08-11 08:00:00 AM
Is it possible that an innocent person was beaten into submission? Why do arrested people have to be beaten by police? What about if he is really innocent? Could the real culprit be out there FREE? Could Mrs. Greene identify the person? Then this would be the answer to everything. His friend said they were both togehter on this day, can someone prove this? If he is guilty, he should be rightly punished, if not, then FAIRNESS should be exercised.
Do the crime, suffer and and feel the pain Posted: 2009-08-11 08:23:00 AM
Why should you waste time and money to give these reptiles a chance to be free and do it all over again? We live in such a lawless land that you can kill and be free, do as you want here. Almost 365 dead and the year has not even ended, SHAME! SAD! I cannot see better being done in Trinidad for politics and money greed will always be.
Scape goat Posted: 2009-08-11 07:22:00 AM
This seems verymuch like a scape goat. 1. the accused was in police custody too long before being charged. 2. A partner can account for him in Roxborough 3. It does not appear as a crime one person can execute.
evidence of crime Posted: 2009-08-11 07:25:00 AM
I am not sure if I am missing something, but I have not read anything stating why this individual was the one arrested for the crime. What evidence if any were the police officers going on when this young man was arrested? Was that information made public? It is a very sad case definitely, when a 25yr old illiterate man, if that is to be believed, is held accountable for a crime without any evidenciary information being given.
Oh really? Posted: 2009-08-11 07:28:00 AM
How is it that the family members and villagers are so sure that Mr. Alexis is innocent? And who gave the villagers permission to illegally gather, protest without a permit, block traffic, burn tires, light a fire in public to burn tires, trespass, loiter, incite riot, etc.
Does it not matter to these people there is a sick human out there Posted: 2009-08-11 07:46:00 AM
These family members should aid the police in finding the real culprit, INSTEAD OF WHAT THEY ARE DOING. To me is says the residents of Tobago dont care that this happened because it happend to a non coloured person. You people are sick and are causing our country to become a Zimbabwe.
Wrong person? Posted: 2009-08-11 03:58:00 AM
If people believe that the police is using this guy as a scapegoat why would they let the woman leave the country before she can positively identify the attacker?
Alexis Posted: 2009-08-11 04:21:00 AM
It does not take a genius to figure out that this man is innocent and is being used to save face. What a shame. Are we that pressured by the international community that we compromise innocent people.
Is it not time that the THA takes over security for Tobago? Posted: 2009-08-11 04:55:00 AM
Oh Lord , is like having your house and another man have the key for it. Tobagonians have no say as to who enters our island and what they do here. The Chief Secretary and his loyal followers are being brain washed by certain groups of outsiders. While they dress in fancy suits and are roped in by outsiders they not seeing the reality of what is taking place . All skin teeth is not laugh. Tobagonians must be responsible for security on Tobago. Then and only then will people cooperate with the police. I personally am afraid of anybody in a uniform and ALL politicians. Wake up people , Tobago as we know it is slipping away from us.
investigaters... investigate!!! Posted: 2009-08-11 04:55:00 AM
this is non sense. there must be a way to find out if this man is guilty or not. what makes forgien police better than ours? the fact that they do their jobs and stand by the oth they took to protect and serve.look at the evdience. it is there.
Of course he's innocent!! Posted: 2009-08-11 09:02:00 AM
as soon as I read yesterday that the "Trinidad Elite Police Team" had apprehended the "murderer" in what? 4 days of investigation, I had severe doubts. We ALL know how the T&T police extract information from people and that an admission of guilt was forced from this poor innocent man, mostly to appease the international & local press. Any judge that acknowledges this evidence as honestly gained, needs to go back to school. Shame on you all.
Anger erupts in Argyle Posted: 2009-08-11 10:40:00 AM
I do not believe this guy is the culprit there is something about his testimony that does not add up.This makes it easy for the police to say they have the culprit behind bars to make the people feel safe. That was too easy they need too keep looking for the real criminal.
shameful Posted: 2009-08-11 05:39:00 AM
this is why the crime situation is the way it is because police refuse to do their job...shame on the police department
Anger Posted: 2009-08-11 09:59:00 AM
Why Clint was not allowed to see an attorney while he was interrogated? Why was he put to sign a statement knowing that he is unable to read and write. Did Mr or Mrs Greene identified Clint? Was DNA testing done on theproperty showing that Clint was there? Did the police find the weapon that was used. Did the police have a witness who said that they saw Clint in the area? Mr. Commissioner of Police all Clint need is a good attorney to create an embarassment to the police force
what kind of micky mouse arrest is this ? Posted: 2009-08-11 12:51:00 AM
i though the police is suppose to verify all allibies before charging the accused ?if this man was made to signed something before he read it because ... he can't read then clearly this case is on its way to be thrown out .. what if he really innocent ? meanwhile the real criminal still out there ... they so hurry to arrest sombdoy ah hope they arrest the right person .. did the police do a line ID parade ? did the victims identifiy this man ? if the police mess this up they all should be fired ...ah real sorry for the victims and can't say how dissapointed i am about the crime rate in t&t ,however i want the police the catch and punish the right person ..
Does the evidence match Posted: 2009-08-11 2:41:00 PM
Questions, how does this young man become suspect, does it means that there is evidence taken from the home or the victim or was he the last one seen around the area where the incident ocurred that identified him as the prime suspect. Does the description that the victim gave match the suspect or have the victim identified him as such. These are common principles that should be take into account. What are these apparently experts are doing? I wish the Greene a speedy recovery phycally and mentally from this horifying incident. All the best to them and their family. Lady in the UK
Mikey Mouse police Posted: 2009-08-11 3:03:00 PM
Police in T&T are like Mikey Mouses so that's the kinda of arrests they make. Heaven help us all.
Trini style justice. Posted: 2009-08-11 3:05:00 PM
Right or wrong person they have to arrests someone to look like they doing something.
washington Posted: 2009-08-11 2:15:00 PM
Sometimes innocent people get arrested, especially when foreigners are involved in order to prevent static and to make it look like the police are working and then they will get kudos for closing the case quickly. They will pick anyone. My prayers go out to the family for quick recovery. But Tnt have major criminal activites.
Hope and Pray Posted: 2009-08-11 3:00:00 PM
I hope and pray that this young man isn't being used as a scapegoat to prove that justice have been served in this matter. If it's true, what the villages are saying of his innocence, then time will tell.Meanwhile, the real perpetrator could be out there just lurking, bidding time to strike again.GD.Cunupia.
Just a passing cloud ... Posted: 2009-08-11 2:20:00 PM
New crimes will dominate the news and this "killer" will be yesterday's news in a couple weeks. But hate crimes will continue both in Trinidad and Tobago, unabated. Until the people of T&T wake up and realize that country and civility must come before party, crime will continue to rule the roost.
Gut feeling Posted: 2009-08-11 5:28:00 PM
I kinda had the "feeling" this was going to happen because of the pressure from society to find the attacker(s). It is easy to pick someone up who has no education and probably has somewhat of a history of petty crimes. The country does not have the resources nor manpower to find the person(s) responsible for this heinous crime. Laziness too is a factor contributing towards this quick arrest. These police officers want to get the job done quickly because they are too lazy to put any efforts into it. I don't know when the Govt will wake up and take some real action against the slackness going on in Trinidad.
