Manning: Smelter coming

WELCOME: Prime Minister Patrick Manning greets Point Fortin MP Paula Gopee-Scoon at the PNM's public education meeting at Frisco Junction, on Monday night.

The controversial aluminium smelter plant at La Brea is a must for Government, insists Prime Minister Patrick Manning.

And there will follow a series of other industrial plants on the controversial La Brea Union Industrial Estate, he said.

At a public meeting of the People’s National Movement (PNM) in Point Fortin Monday night, Manning and his Energy Minister, Conrad Enill said Government intended to build the smelter.

This despite opposition from environmental groups, residents, and a High Court order that has stalled construction of the Alutrint smelter.

The ruling has been appealed and the case is for hearing in September.

To get to Point Fortin, Manning and his political allies passed the industrial site where residents have continued a protest vigil.

They erected signs that read ’Manning, Smelter not welcome’.

Police officers kept watch. But at the meeting at Frisco Junction, Point Fortin, Manning told supporters, ’You are going to be home to the first aluminium smelter in Trinidad and Tobago. And those who are against it will tell you that it is not that they are opposed to the smelter, but to the whole concept of industrialisation on the whole.’

He said, ’As we industrialise it is not possible to industrialise without adversely affecting the environment, but the PNM says that is not so, because there are international standards established to determine the levels of emission of one kind or the next that are acceptable which will allow human beings to coexist.’

Emphasising the concern the Government has for the environment, Manning said, ’sustainable development is what we are all about and while we use the environment we must use it and ensure that we must not prejudice the environment for generations to come.’

He announced that in addition to the smelter plant other industrial plants would be located in the La Brea/Point Fortin area, ’And you all will live to see not only aluminium smelter in La Brea and Point Fortin but LNG expansion and more industrial plants located in this part of the country and that is the policy of the Government of Trinidad and Tobago,’ said Manning.

The same sentiments were expressed earlier by Enill who stated in the course of his address on the state of the energy industries, ’ We also intend to develop the aluminium smelter, not only to sell our natural gas, but to develop a plastic industry to export these products to markets in the world.’

He said in addition to the proposed plant ’government is also looking at alternative energy and this will be dealt with during the next term’.

Speaking specifically about the plant Enill said ’the decision we have made is to withstand the challenges of the world’. The public meeting was the fifth in a series designed to educate members of the party on the need for electoral reform.

Smelter Plant in Trinidad. Posted: 2009-08-12 05:25:00 AM
Why? is Mr manning persisting in allowing an Aluminium Smelter Plant in my beloved Trinidad & Tobago.Does he not know what effects this will have on the enviroment and the population? or does he not care? The American's will not allow this plant in America, so they look for a so called third world country to build their Smelter plant. Please my people say no way to Smelter Plant. And remind my Manning that you have the power in your fingers to remove him and his government at the next general election if he persist with this insipid idea of Smelter plant in Trinidad & Tobago.Nuff said Trini in England.
Oppose to the Smelter Posted: 2009-08-12 04:39:00 AM
Mr Manning you said that as we industrialize it is not possible to adversely affect the environment. You claim that the people are oppose to the concept of industrialization, but have you ever thought that they are merely concerned. Whilst the first world countries are doing there best to preserve the environment by recycling etc, what are we doing? How are we to move forward and gain status as a first world country?
SMELTER ARROGANCE Posted: 2009-08-12 07:21:00 AM
We do not need a smelter what we need is a hospital for proper medical care, what we need is a proper sporting facility to maintain fitness and wellness to lead healthier lives, not a plant that we are not sure how its going to affect our physical health. It's interesting that there is a push for the smelter and not a hospital that was promised how many years ago.
Smelta coming Posted: 2009-08-12 06:37:00 AM
What kind of disrespect is this coming from the PM,did the courts of this land make a ruling on this smelta. What about the dangers facing the people living within the zones of this smelta, is he contended to have these people suffer from all kinds of cancer . My grand mother use to say do not wait until night to take a candle to see what you can in the day . How uncareing of that PM .
What is wrong with the Government of T&T? Posted: 2009-08-12 08:08:00 AM
Manning said "there are international standards established to determine the levels of emission of one kind or the next....wich allow human beings to coexist." Since when does the government of Trinidad follow any standards...farless for international standards. A poor woman died Sunday from a snake bite beacuse it took hospital officals 2 hours before they "attempted" to treat her. Standards are never followed nor upheld by the PNM government, I guess that's why Manning run to Cuba for his own medical treatment because he know what a slump of a job his admin. is doing, and he's to be blamed. We trinis need to unite and put this PNM government where they need to be...in JAIL. They are all crooks.

Remember not too long ago, the PNM voters who were celebrating the court ruling, in favour of the smelter not happening. People in Trinidad fail to understand that the PNM government never fails to do whatever they please. Almost all of the PNM policies is never in the best interest of the nation. However, they still keep voting PNM - Why? Cause they like it so
Smelter coming: Manning Posted: 2009-08-12 09:39:00 AM
If only Mr.Manning can act at the same speed to say, hospital beds coming, jobs coming, water in the pipes coming, better roads coming, to name a few, then we could give him credit where it is due, for a doing his job. Unfortunately that is only a dream list, that will never become a reality, as long as the PNM is in power, it has been proven over the many, many past few years
genius idea Posted: 2009-08-12 08:41:00 AM
Other countries are closing smelters due to the decline in the demand of aluminium (as a result of a decline in the manufacturing of cars and other such things)....but we're so smart we're going to build a smelter! O_o and how is this benefitting us in the long run? really now?!
Manning should know Posted: 2009-08-12 08:53:00 AM
If the people don't want the plant it can't happen. He is working for us. This is just like your butler insisting that you put asbestos in your ceiling "for your own good and the good of the household".
Some must be sacrificed to the good of all....or something like that Posted: 2009-08-12 08:59:00 AM
As the saying goes: nothing is impossible for the man who does not have to do it. I mention these words to underscore the fact that while Mr Manning sees absolutely nothing wrong with people co-existing with a smelter plant; in fact he will probably even argue that smelter plants promote good health and long life. Be that as it may, he will nonetheless live as far away from them as possible. But, quite nobly, that is the price he is willing to pay.
Comming soon!! Posted: 2009-08-12 09:16:00 AM
death sentence for La Brea residents.
Smelter Posted: 2009-08-12 10:13:00 AM
Why is this PM so hell bent on building this smelter. He is like a man obsessed and will not listen to any reasoning. He is like a petulant child. Obviously public opinion or even the court's ruling matters little to him. Every country is the world is trying to preserve their environment and all this man want to see is concrete everywhere. How much vision 20/20 is that? More like tunnel vision. Please Manning --- leave the smelter talk alone for a bit, nah. We tired hearing you.
Smelter Posted: 2009-08-12 12:15:00 AM
Yes! Keep voting PNM, Which stand for PUSH NATIONALS DOWN. No new Hospital, Fire Station & Schools but keep building Smelter.PNM forever,Keep voting PNM. Sam T.O
Aluminium Smelter Posted: 2009-08-12 08:19:00 AM
There should be more transparency for this undertaking. Was a proper due diligence done? Economic justification? Remember ISCOTT?
Manning: Smelter coming Posted: 2009-08-12 07:27:00 AM
It seems as though the PNM government always seems to be doing whatever they pleases, with no retreat or compromise, like other civilized governments from around the world. I left Trinidad during the 1960's, and during my recent visit to Trinidad, I have never seen such poverty and hopelessness. It is really and truly a shame, that the PNM government spends billions and billions of the nation's money, and the country is in such a derelict state. Unfortunately, it seems as though Trinidadians have adopted to living in some sort of a disarray, when it comes to voting for change. I would sincerely love to see the day, when the people in my homeland votes for change, and start prospering again, just like other countries around the world - Trini, Canada

SMELTER Posted: 2009-08-12 2:40:00 PM
If the smelter is such a good idea why doesn't Patrick build it right next to his palace and leave the residents of La Brea alone?
Shameless Posted: 2009-08-12 2:44:00 PM
What a disgrace to this country. We have a PM who blatantly disrespects the people's view. Our leaders are selling out our lands and wealth to the first world. Our PM will not even defend us. When is the PM going to get the point that we do not want this smelter and it is OUR country , not his!
