Jack knocks minister's request for tickets
...Rowley, UNC MPs, independent senators off list

A disappointed Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner yesterday chastised Sports Minister Gary Hunt, whom he said requested 172 tickets ’for parliamentarians’ for last night’s football match, but did not include in this list a single Opposition MP (Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday included).

The list also did not include any independent senator or even his own colleague, Dr Keith Rowley, whose vote gives the Government a special majority in the House of Representatives.

The Express was unable to reach Hunt for him to confirm that he did receive 172 tickets.

Warner told the Express that six weeks ago, Hunt met with the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation and himself and requested an increase in his allocation of (free) tickets. ’From the 24 seats he has had in the last 20 years for the minister’s box, he allocated unto himself 172 seats,’ Warner said. He added that Hunt told the meeting that those seats were for parliamentarians and ambassadors, among others.

’He told us not to invite them because they would do so through his invitations that he would issue parking stickers, they would pass through the castro gate (at the stadium), and that he had made a special place for them to be entertained etc,’ Warner said.

’My interpretation was that all parliamentarians, and I mean all because it is 172 seats he took, would be invited. But when I asked him for his invitation list, which I received at 4 p.m. yesterday (Tuesday), I saw not a single UNC (United National Congress) parliamentarian or independent senator.

So I called him and asked, ’Minister, how could you not send invitations for Opposition parliamentarians and independent senators?’

He said, ’I told you it was for Government parliamentarians.’ So I then asked him, ’Minister, then why 172 seats (for Government parliamentarians)?’ He (Hunt) replied, ’Because we have permanent secretaries and so on,’ Warner recalled.

Warner said when he returned to the minister’s invitation list, he saw that Tobago House of Assembly Chief Secretary Orville London was not invited. He said Hunt told him he forgot London. ’But then I noticed that he didn’t invite Keith Rowley,’ Warner said, adding that he checked with Rowley to confirm this.

’I had to go this morning and invite Keith Rowley and send him a letter of apology. I had to send to Mrs Beverly Drayton (secretary to the Opposition Leader) invitations for all the UNC members of the House of Representatives and the Senate, with a letter of apology in each envelope. And then I also had this morning to call all the independent senators and apologise to them and send them invitations.’

Port of Spain Mayor Murchison Brown also was not invited. ’How could you play football in Port of Spain and not invite the mayor?’ Warner asked.

He said others such as Deputy Speaker Pennelope Beckles and Minister Peter Taylor did not receive a ticket (although their names were on the minister’s list), and he (Warner) had to send them tickets as well. Warner said he assumed that there was some ’administrative delay or bungle’ as to why this happened.

But he said he told Hunt that after this football match between Trinidad and Tobago and El Salvador, they would have to sit down and review the manner in which invitations are issued.

’If you want 172 invitations for parliamentarians, it can’t be for PNM (People’s National Movement) only,’ Warner said, adding that in the past, he (Warner) invited all members of Parliament, regardless of political persuasion, to matches.

Jack Knock's Minister 's Request Posted: 2009-08-13 05:00:00 AM
Hunte should hang his head in shame after reading this article.Just shows what these pple are and how their minds work. I cannot understand why the pple of Trinidad and Tobago is letting this gov't get away with all that is going on. Half those tickets should have been give to those who're football fanatics and cannot afford to pay for a ticket let alone see our Soca Warriors play a game outside Trindad. It stinks. Mr Warner in future please ensure Free tickets are shared equally. Fotty Fan.

How unpatriotic...they just take and take and take, they do not give to the citizens.
request for tickets Posted: 2009-08-13 05:45:00 AM
This bungle is an example of all that´s wrong in Trinidad and Tobago today. No sense of class, little sense of protocol all stemming from a total lack of principles. And I´m talking about all sides in this conflict. The Minister should have invited parliamentarians from all sides. I mean, 172 tickets and none for non-government party parliamentatians!! On the other hand, it was not Mr. Warner´s prerogative to go behind the Minister´s back apologising in his name and offering invitations. Lord!! And these people want to represent a nation!!

In the world of Mr Gary Hunt: we look after our own.

Well this is PNM country and nobody else matters...
Jack Knock Minister's Request for Tickets Posted: 2009-08-13 01:38:00 AM
Well, I too, am disappointed and surprised at the behavious of Mr. Hunt and his ministry. I am so naive that I really believe that the PNM never acts with bias, but this report shows I am wrong and I am very saddened by this blatant show of partisan politics. Wow, how do you come back from this? That is truly "in your face" discrimination. The Minister should have to apologise and another ministry should be put in charge of the administration of tickets in future. Hats off to Mr. Warner for bringing this to the public's notice even though he is being pulverized by his own party members, he is still standing up for them in the interest of fair play.
Tickets for friends and family Posted: 2009-08-13 07:33:00 AM
Again, it shows Jack is for all of Trinbago. Why Mr.Hunt is still the minister of sport? It is clear the tickets is for his friends and family, while certain ministers are left out. It's time for this to STOP.
Freeness galore! Posted: 2009-08-13 06:23:00 AM
Answer me this, why can't these esteemed servants of the nation actually pay for their tickets like everybody else. It's fine that they have tickets on reserve, but why can't they pay for them; if they are true supporters and patriots then dishing out the funds should come naturally. This is symptomatic of what's wrong with our country, it's all about entitlement as opposed to service; getting into government is all about what I can get out of the system.
tickets Posted: 2009-08-13 02:57:00 AM
it's clear Hunt is PNM. Why do they get free tickets? They should have to pay like the general public.
Dat is man!!! Posted: 2009-08-13 07:07:00 AM
That is a man of integrity!!! Hope you learn from him
WHAT ????????? Posted: 2009-08-13 07:16:00 AM
WWhy should palimentarians get free tickets? They making more money than the average spectaor - let them pay ! It is time to stop favouring these politicians - they are not there for a free ride. I mean look, they were not even fair in a simple ticket distribution - imagine how they are dealing with our affairs.
What about public service Posted: 2009-08-13 03:52:00 AM
A spat about football tickets indicates the lack strategic focus on both sides of the House. When I saw the headline, I thought great someone is bringing realism into the debate on the state of politics in T and T. Sadly not!
In full agreement!! Posted: 2009-08-13 08:04:00 AM
Wow!! Good job Jack. I am in full agreement. Everyone should share in the comp. tickets. Not just one or another, I think Gary fell short here. KAL
Request for tickets?? Posted: 2009-08-13 06:06:00 AM
This is ridiculous, why parliamentarians get free tickets to see the national football team and all other citizens have to pay. This is an un-ethical trend that I have been observing for the longest while with our political leaders, they pay for nothing out of their hefty pockets. People, please be reminded our politicians and senior public servants receive large salaries, plus perks including an entertainment account. They should pay just like you and to see our national teams and other local acts. I think it is totally un-ethical and unacceptable for our so-call leaders to ride for free in our society. May God help us in T&T.

These people/Ministers are berating Mr. Warner for the grant to the unemployed in his district and they want "FREE" tickets for the football game to fete with free drinks and roti and doubles. What a disgrace! Charge each of the beggers for free tickets, Mr. Warner. They disgust me! Capitol Hill/W.DC
Jack Outs Gary Posted: 2009-08-13 3:01:00 PM
Poor excuse, Mr. Hunt. Doesn't your staff have a standard invite list that is edited as needed? Remember you are Minister of Sports Trinidad and Tobago, Not Sports Minister PNM
