Jack opens office in Couva North

CLEANING UP: Basdeo Ramjattan cleans a desk in Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner's office at Orangefield Road, Chase Village, yesterday.

In a simple office, on the ground floor of a house belonging to a resident in Basdeo Panday’s Couva North constituency, Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner will today begin his quest to unseat the party’s political leader.

And many residents said yesterday that they were looking forward to meeting the man who may bring change to their constituency.

The office is at the home of Basdeo Ramjattan at Orangefield Road, Carapichaima.

Ramjattan said, ’I was a supporter of Panday for 33 years and now it’s time for a change. When Panday had just entered politics, he was great. He did a lot for the people. But we no longer see him in the constituency. We want change and Jack is bringing that to us.

’We welcome him. I will give my life for him,’ he said.

The office will be opened during a gala ceremony this afternoon. And Warner intends spending the next day meeting constituents and listening to their concerns.

Last week, Panday went to the Chaguanas Borough Corporation, meeting residents of Warner’s Chaguanas West constituency.

But many residents in the Couva North constituency have already pledged their support for Warner. Gildharee Ramsoondar, an oyster vendor, said: ’I am for change because I have not seen my representative in a while. I am going to see Warner on Saturday because I have a lot of concerns.’

Teenager Trevorsen Calliste of Brickfield Village, said he too wanted change. ’I am for anybody who is helping the youths and if Mr Warner is giving us that they I am with him.’

Sadia Mohammed said she was disappointed that Panday only toured the constituency during his election campaigns.

A few residents, however, believe that the men should put their differences aside and unite for the people. ’They should come together and put their ideas together. They are both good men so if they come together it will work out well for all of us,’ Shanti Seemungal said. -Carolyn Kissoon
