CRACKDOWN
Another gun found at St Joseph Police Station; corporal on narcotics charge

A recently transferred acting Corporal from the St Joseph Police Station remains in police custody after officers of the Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU) raided his Arouca home yesterday and found a quantity of packaged narcotics used in court cases.

The officer, who has approximately 16 years service, has been on continuous sick leave for the past two months and is among the 38 officers transferred following the discovery of a cache of arms, ammunition and narcotics in the ceiling of the station last Saturday.

Sources say the CIU officers received information and raided the officer’s home yesterday morning.

Following the find, the officer was taken to CIU’s headquarters on St Vincent Street, Port of Spain, where he was interrogated and subsequently processed.

The officer is expected to appear before a Port of Spain Magistrate today.

According to sources, the narcotics which were found have been used in previous cases, that were completed.

Upon completion of the cases, the exhibits were ordered destroyed by presiding magistrates.

The narcotics, sources said, were still stored in evidence bags and labelled accordingly.

Exhibits from cases in which the officer was a complainant, dating back to 2004, were also found.

Sources say the officer was attached to the Western Division and was among 15 officers who were transferred out of the CID Division.

On Wednesday, acting Commissioner of Police James Philbert called the action of corrupted officers in the service ’a betrayal’ and vowed to rid the force of such negativity which tarnished the service’s image.

In March 22, 2008, the locker room of the Sangre Grande Station was searched by Fraud Squad detectives and evidence exhibits including marijuana and ammunition were found.

Eight officers attached to the Eastern Division Task Force were subsequently transferred and are currently still on active duty.

What a joke!Reading this article made me so disgruntled owing to the fact,an officer was caught be4 and is still in the force.Honestly do you think he'ld have stopped? The powers that be at the time of his alleged crime, allowed him to con't working. That officer should have been sent to prison. He got a swcond chance and has now blown it again. Get that man off our street and put him away for a very long time. Name and shame them all. Concerned Pple
Re: Crackdown Posted: 2009-08-14 12:32:00 AM
So the narcotics were ordered destroyed? Who is right in their minds to think these crooked cops would actually destroy it? No wonder so many crimes in the country. What a disgrace? This officer is obviously guilty, he should be fired, not moved to another location. Weed out ALL these suckers? They were too comfortable in their jobs.
CRACKDOWN Posted: 2009-08-14 02:56:00 AM
Balistics should be tested and if we keep records it would reveal if any serious crimes were commited with them. What a shame!!no wonder we have such a low detection rate. God help us please.

We living Mexican style in T&T.Some members of the protective service are taking example from the Cartel in Mexico.Do they know what happens to those officers, they must look closely and they will learn from the system.Corrupt personals pays a big price for their actions.
Crackdown Posted: 2009-08-13 11:26:00 PM
I think that this is good news and a step in the right direction in weeding out the corruption so close to home. Their motto is to protect and serve and it would be nice to hear more of that except they can't protect and serve if they're corrupted. Let's hope the arrests are not a cover up to look good and hope once dealt with the real clean up can start with all of the crimes---how many are involved there.

CRACKDOWN Posted: 2009-08-14 01:43:00 AM
Something is wrong with this picture. I am now certain, that these law enforcement officers must only have 'street sense' and no 'common sense.' Your police station under seige for ammo, guns, (and I think drugs) found in the ceiling. 40 of you shuffled around to other police stations. The plan is, to search your homes, (that was in the news...smart move by the cops...'snicker') And you still got caught with drugs in your home? 'Oh what an --- you are. (Danraj ain't have nothing on you). Imagine these are the people hired to protect and serve. Ah bunch ah IDIOTS. Kiya.
Corrupt Officers Posted: 2009-08-14 06:10:00 AM
Why are corrupt officers being transferred when they should be sent home?
"CRACKDOWN" Posted: 2009-08-14 06:12:00 AM
Well it's about time, I am glad they are finally looking at the police. don't get me wrong not all the police are crooked, but majority of them are doing the crime out there whether it be drugs, rape & murder. The people were voiceing they concerns but no one was listening. I say you got to start cleaning from the top, I would have ask for Scotland Yard help. There is alot of stuff happening in T&T Police Stations....Trinigirl (Toronto)
Transfer? Posted: 2009-08-14 07:38:00 AM
Why is the Trinidad Police Service using the same method used by the Catholic Church against paedophile priests? A transfer is not a punishment! What nonsense is this!!!
WHAT ????????????? Posted: 2009-08-14 08:00:00 AM
A month ago i was saying hunt down the criminals and hang them, this time i am saying hunt down the police officers and jail dem, however if they murdered, hanga them too!
Corrupted Officers Posted: 2009-08-14 06:46:00 AM
I'm so glad they are finally doing something to get rid of the real criminals - those officers who took an oath to protect but instead decided to destroy the country for their own greed. The level of crime couldn't have happened without their betrayal and disloyality to the people of T&T. Lock them up and throw away the key! SM - Greensboro NC
Re: Corrupted Officers Posted: 2009-08-14 12:41:00 AM
Harsh punishment should be given to police officers and any parts of the governments who take bribes and commit these kinds of crimes. It starts here when they are busted and send out messages to get tipped off. Once the gov't gets serious, others will not want to take chances. Trinidad will then become a better place little paradise.
THEY WERE TRANSFERRED ?????? Posted: 2009-08-14 06:47:00 AM
FIRE THOSE WHO TRANSFERRED THEM AND PLEASE FIRE THEM. NO TOLERANCE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Our beautiful TT is at stake, our sons and daughters are at stake !!!
Crackdown Posted: 2009-08-14 06:47:00 AM
Wow! Didn't take long for this to come out. What is in the dark must always come to light. These officers are people first, officers second. Though, when they took this job they should have realized that they were and are held to a much higher standard because of the responsibility that they are entrusted with. However, if your personality is one that is corrupt and prone to wrong doing no amount of uniform, badge or gun can change that. Philly Chemist
Random drug testing of officers. Posted: 2009-08-14 06:49:00 AM
This is an opportunity to help officers who are addicted to drugs. Regular random testings should be conducted or should be required of all officers. If an officer is using drugs he should be in rehab or kicked out of the force.

when will these greddy police officers ever learn these are ppl we look up to what examplethey setting fro us and the youths
CRACKDOWN Posted: 2009-08-14 07:16:00 AM
It is time to stop transferring these corrupt police officers and start firing them. They give the service a bad name. My sister has been an honest hard working officer for about 27yrs. and she suffers every time something like this is in the news. So please someone in authority fire these scamps.
police corruption Posted: 2009-08-14 08:34:00 AM
who is going to guard the guards?.The entire police service needs to be revamped and more accountability is needed by heads of these police stations.when are we going to realise that in order to fight the criminal contingent our police service needs to get their act together. Trini in florida
CRACKDOWN Posted: 2009-08-14 08:40:00 AM
These men are cops who are sworn to uphold the law. Instead, they have become corrupted and are contributing to the crime in our country. Weed them out and jail them.
corrupt officers Posted: 2009-08-14 03:31:00 AM
Transferring the problem does not and will not solve the problem of corrupt officers .Fire these officers.
What a shame. Posted: 2009-08-14 07:49:00 AM
If you cannot trust the people that are placed there to keep us safe, then who do we trust, no wonder thee are so many unsolved cases, it is just that there are so many rogue cops that they make the bandits look like boyscouts, these cops must be made to pay and pay dearly. how can you take an oath, and then turn around and break it.CT USA
Corrupted Police Posted: 2009-08-14 08:04:00 AM
And there is many more of them out in the field. This is a great justice in finding these crooks / hoodlums dressed in police uniform. We need the CIU to continue with real police work and seach out more of this type of corruption. Keeping them in the force is not an option. They should be tried according to the law and locked away permanently. We need more people to come forward and help regain our country by giving the public eay access to CIU annonomous tip line. People will call and leave bogus messages, but you will get valid calls on these hoodlums as well. Good start, please continue
Cop found with drugs in home Posted: 2009-08-14 04:19:00 AM
These are the guys that are supposed to be fighting the drug gangs, no wonder there are never any witnesses to the shootings, how can anyone trust the police to protect them against these thugs, they are in on it themselves!
crackdown Posted: 2009-08-14 04:31:00 AM
Let's see how long this will last. This is only a ploy to appease the public. It will eventually get swept under the carpet like everything else. (Trini in Florida)
what!!!! Posted: 2009-08-14 04:37:00 AM
why are these officers being transferred, they should be fired, charged and convicted like the criminals that they are.
Why is this a surprise Posted: 2009-08-14 08:55:00 AM
Why does this surprise anyone? ... we all know how corrupt the service is/has been. I remember being in a maxi years ago that was stopped by a police officer who told the driver "give me a hundred or I will give you a ticket". I witnessed the police plant ammunition on a family member and claimed that it was his when they were making a raid. The real question is will this be treated as an isolated issue or will this be the start of a meaningful exercise of weeding out the bad cops ... chances are that this is so pervasive that you would be hard pressed to find the "untarnished" officers who can be trusted and who are willing to put their own lives on the line to betray the band of brothers
Crackdown Posted: 2009-08-14 09:01:00 AM
What the AG or the PM need to do is transfer James Philbert, to civilian life.He is presently in charge of The Keystone cops.
Police Corruption Posted: 2009-08-14 09:19:00 AM
Is this a joke how can these officers be transferred after committing these crimes and still on active duty somebody have to be mad in Trinidad to allow this they should be fired immediately.
Dirty Police Officer Posted: 2009-08-14 05:20:00 AM
Transferring these officers to another location is sending a bad message all that would do is say go some place else and continue to be a crooked police officer, these officers should be fired, terminated, get rid of the bad apples. Trini in Florida.
Human resource management Posted: 2009-08-14 05:21:00 AM
The low performance of the police service indicates there is a void of managerial skills. It is totally reactive to situations and has not analyse past situations and put preemptive measures in place to deal with these recurring situations in the police service.
Crackdown Posted: 2009-08-14 09:43:00 AM
I believe in benevolence. I believe in giving a man another chance. However, this is police business. Police is part of the judiciary who were employed and paid for protecting and serving, for fighting crime, not creating crime. The solution to this problem calls for a mandate from parliament, the police service commission, that corrupt officers will be investigated, charged, and if found guilty, their job must be terminated without benefits. When the officers know that they will be terminated without benefits, I doubt very much that they will persist with such horrible behaviour. Yes, fire them! As a matter of fact all stations should be searched. It is ridiculous. No wonder they are accused of planting evidence- they have the stuff to plant on even innocent people. ac,md.
CACHE FOUND! Posted: 2009-08-14 07:01:00 AM
Jail this officer for life!!!! & seize all his properties & assets!!! no questions asked!!! We got to send a stern warning & message to those corrupt cops!
Errant Officers Posted: 2009-08-14 11:08:00 AM
How can I possibly give any info I may be privy to to any police officer? How can I be sure that I am not giving such info to an errant officer? My life can then be on the line.
CRACKDOWN Posted: 2009-08-14 09:58:00 AM
While it is positive to see that the Ag Commissioner is trying to rid the Police Service of corrupt officers, after reading this article I am now questioning why is it that they continue to transfer and not suspend the Police Officers suspected of corruption. By transferring you are not dealing with the problem, but just sending it elsewhere for someone else to deal with.
reason for dismissal Posted: 2009-08-14 07:21:00 AM
Now, the reason for dismissal is crystal clear. Transferring is not an option anymore since the problems are not solved or eradicated. Time for change and the re-introduction of citizen's confidence in the system.
Please tell me something new Posted: 2009-08-14 10:34:00 AM
I have stated before, that crime in T & T continues to increase because of corrupted police officers. Members of the public have voiced the same sentiment, but apparently our comments fall on deaf ears. Mr. Philbert, you now have the smoking gun in your hand, what are you going to do with it. There has been enough talk about the declining state in T&T. Action speaks louder than words. You and your predecessor have said cleaning up corruption is a top priority. The time has come to do something about it. How many innocent people are sitting in jail, or worst case have lost their lives because members of the police service literally set them up. Those found guilty of corruption, should be buried under the jail, and then a review of all cases they were involved in, should be carefully reviewed. Chances are that there are people currently serving time for crimes they never committed. A Trini in VA
Finally they are doing something good in TNT Posted: 2009-08-14 11:18:00 AM
Crackdown is what I'm talking about this should have been done some 5 years ago to clean out the corrupted cops who is there only to get paid/briby on the outside and are involved in crimes, drugs and not about to protect the Island TNT , after they sworn in to protect however they are abusing the system, get them out and jail them for many years. London
Crackdown Posted: 2009-08-14 07:40:00 AM
The Acting Commissioner of Police and his "crew", in my view need to be highly commended for their actions in what must be terrible circumstances for them. Arresting and subsequently prosecuting own's "own", cannot be pleasant. Congratulations to them for their actions and fairmindedness. On a separate note, does the Acting Commissioner have to be "anointed" by someone before he is appointed Commissioner? His work has already shown that he is worthy of the position.
Crackdown Posted: 2009-08-14 11:55:00 AM
I always say for them to get rid of the crime in Trinidad they have to clean up the police force, they have some of the biggest criminal around. Continue with more searches and you would be surprise of what you will find. Trini in Toronto
Officers transferred, one arreted. Posted: 2009-08-14 12:01:00 AM
Good work in locating the tip of the iceberg. No one officer in a station with as large a contingent as St. Joseph could have operated this scam alone, so the transfers, a cleansing of the Augean Stables, is quite in order. Everyone in the chain of custody at that station needs to be charged with conspiracy and recieving and profiting from the proceeds of crime. Upon conviction, they should be drummed out of the service and all assets other than a basic house siezed.A basic three bedroom house like one in Diamond Vale, is the sort of house a policeman with a teacher wife could afford. anything else, bank ccounts included, needs an explanation. Because the men are part of the police service they could all be fingerprinted. Those refusing to be printed , implying that they have something to hide, need to be suspended without pay and charged with hndering prosecution. I am a strong believer in the Police Service of TnT, but rotten oranges in a box, contaminates the entire batch. Clean them out and disinfect the system. In future, every officer applicant must be fingerprinted. For all we know they may have been criminals who joined the force because of these opportunities. Nothing new Posted: 2009-08-14 1:52:00 PM
the police service like many gov't services in trinidad is administered in an unbusiness like and unprofessional manner. Poor work ehtic, poor controls, poor checks and balances...the results speak boisterously...
Get Rid Offf Them Posted: 2009-08-14 12:38:00 AM
this reminds me off the three police from Tunapuna station who carry the businessman to the ATM and rob him. It's time they remove these police from the service... shame on these police
THE 3 STOOGES Posted: 2009-08-14 10:04:00 AM
The 3 Stooges are finally listening. I have been saying this for over a year...TnT is too small for all this crime. There is no way these knucklehead uneducated punks, could be so lawless; committing crimes in broad daylight, with no masks, if they were not getting help from the police. Walking out of court on a daily, charges dropped, witnesses recanting their stories. I said, 'clean up the police force, and see crime decline.' I believe the 3 Stooges were afraid of all who will be implemented in the arrest. Seems like they put on their bullet-proof vests, and is heading in the firing range. Do it and do it fair. Fire them, from Top to Bottom. They nasty. Kiya.

Hahahaha....this is all a joke! The government knows that the force is corrupted so they trying to make it look like the doing something. This is only for the eyes of the public..."as if the new station they transfer to don't have a ceiling". PLZ!
