The political differences between Opposition Leader and political leader of the United National Congress (UNC) Basdeo Panday and UNC Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner have taken a new twist, which includes threats of taking their dispute to court.
Warner is accusing Panday of being a nemakaram, while Panday continues to question the source of money Warner gave to assist the Chaguanas Borough Corporation to deal with 54 workers who were threatened with dismissals.
On Friday night, at a political meeting in Carapichaima, which is in the Couva North constituency represented in Parliament by the Opposition Leader, Warner claimed he has spent millions of dollars to pay legal fees for Panday. ’And the sum included $1 million to stand bail for Panday’s wife, Oma,’ he added.
Warner also accused Panday of unbecoming behaviour and promised further revelations, not only about Panday, he said, but also about Orlando Nagessar, Deputy Mayor of Chaguanas.
Warner noted that he has been accused by Panday of receiving $30 million from a man on behalf of the UNC and that, so far, he, Warner, has not accounted for the money. ’Why would a man give me $30 million instead of giving it to Panday? Why give it to me and not him?’ he asked.
Warner said the final straw that broke the camel’s back was an accusation that he, Warner, was involved in illegal dealings.
’He called me a drug lord but when in 2007 I paid his legal bills, travel rental of cars and gifts of computers to him, he did not call me a drug lord then,’ said Warner.
Warner said he was still holding the bail for Oma Panday and that if Panday wanted, he could ask him, Warner, to release the bail.
He said an English Queen’s Counsel was expected in Trinidad on Tuesday to start preparing his brief against Panday.
’I will sue all of them,’ said Warner.
He also spoke about Nagessar, saying that he intends ’to go to every home in Felicity and explain to them what happened in his office’. He referred to alleged complaints by a woman. Nagessar is also the Local Government representative for Felicity.
Yesterday, Panday told the Sunday Express, in a telephone interview, that he was not disturbed by what Warner is saying at his political meetings. ’A man will use desperate tactics because his political career is coming to an end and he is now irrelevant to the UNC,’ said Panday.
Responding to the claims of financial support allegedly given to him by Warner, Panday said: ’If what he is saying is true, I am still asking him to account for the $30 million he received on behalf of the party.’
