Security guard killed on duty

DEAD: Glenroy Jones

The killer(s) who snuffed out the life of security guard Glenroy Jones have already been forgiven by Jones’ relatives

Jones, 43, who was employed with Imjin Security Services Limited, lived on Serraneau Road, Belmont, and was shot around 7.40 a.m. yesterday whilst on duty at the Police Service Commission (PSC) Headquarters on Cipriani Boulevard, Port of Spain.

He subsequently died at the Port of Spain General Hospital whilst undergoing emergency surgery.

Speaking with the Sunday Express yesterday at their Belmont home, Jones’ twin brother Leroy, who is also a security officer and stationed at Stephenson’s on Frederick Street, Port of Spain said: ’I forgive you (killer) and I hope the person(s) changes their life. I do not hold any malice.’

Adding that his brother was an extremely loving person, Leroy said: ’We are Christians and would never say a bad word to anyone. My brother never used to drink or lime. He has a 17-year old daughter who is not doing well after hearing the news.’

Jones’ killing has now pushed the murder toll to 334 for the year thus far.

Jones, who has been employed with Imjin for the past five years, was shot once in the middle of his head.

When Sunday Express visited PSC’s headquarters yesterday, acting Commissioner of Police James Philbert and PSC President Christopher Thomas along with a party of homicide detectives including Insps Boyce and Isaac and Sgt Lawrence were present.

Speaking with reporters, Thomas said he remains shaken by the incident and could not comment further since the matter is under investigation.

Philbert said information received suggested that Jones was on duty when he opened the gate for someone. Philbert further said investigations were on-going and he would soon enlist the assistance of the media in the hopes of capturing the suspect(s).

Director of Personnel Administration at PSC, Gloria Edwards-Joseph commended the quick response of the police but said: ’Crime is now on our doorstep.’

A visibly upset Edwards-Joseph said everyone is shocked over the shooting death and also labelled the killing as ’senseless and extremely tragic’.

Colleagues of Jones who were also gathered at the PSC described their fallen counterpart as being a ’very joyful, quiet person who was full of life’.

A female colleague who was on duty at the time said Jones came to work at 6 a.m. and while patrolling the second floor she heard three gunshots.

’When I came outside I saw him lying on the ground bleeding with a gunshot wound to the head,’ the colleague said.

Sources say that Jones’ service firearm - .357 Magnum Rouger- - which was fully loaded was stolen.

Homicide detectives will continue reviewing security surveillance tapes which are posted around PSC compounds and also neighbouring businessplaces in the hopes of securing an image of Jone’s killer (s).
