Motorists are again being warned to comply with the rules of road traffic safety.
The warning came from Acting Commissioner of Police James Philbert following the deaths of 50-year-old Staff Sgt Reginald West, who is attached to the Special Anti-Crime Unit (SAUTT), Army Private Lyndon Leopold of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force and Morvant residents Terry King and Roger Hercules.
Speaking with reporters yesterday, Philbert said police officers will be deployed on the nation’s roads in a bid to curb the number of accidents.
Police reports state that at around 5.30 a.m. yesterday, King, 30, of Critchlow Drive, Chinapoo, Morvant, and Hercules, 29, also of Morvant, left Zen nightclub with King driving a Lancer motorcar belonging to Hercules. The men were heading east along the Priority Bus Route (PBR), near the Citrus Growers Association factory, when they came into contact with West, who was heading west along the PBR.
West at the time was heading to SAUTT Headquarters at Riverside Plaza, Port of Spain.
Following the accident, eyewitnesses called the police and helped fire officers of the Wrightson Road Headquarters use the ’Jaws of Life’ to free the men from the mangled wreck.
The trio died on the spot.
In an unrelated accident, Leopold, 30, who was employed as a driver at the Defence Force Headquarters, died after losing control of his vehicle in Mausica yesterday morning.
Leopold, who enlisted into the T&T Regiment in 2003, was first posted to the First Infantry Battalion.
In a media release, Commanding Officer of the T&T Regiment Colonel Kenrick Maharaj sent his deepest condolences to relatives and friends of Leopold. Investigations are continuing into both accidents.
