Panday denies plot against Jack, Ramesh

Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday has said there is no plot to prevent MPs Jack Warner or Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj from contesting the leadership of the party in its upcoming internal elections.

A person who is before the party’s disciplinary committee cannot contest positions in the internal party elections.

This means that Warner, a deputy political leader of the UNC, could be stripped of this title, which he also shares with Siparia MP Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Opposition Senator Wade Mark.

Both Warner and Maharaj repeatedly argued that this was the intent of Panday and the Executive. Maharaj, after he was asked to answer to charges levelled against him, said in his letter of response that this was a move to ensure that Panday was unopposed in the internal elections and retains the leadership.

Questioned on this allegation on Friday, Panday said: ’Mr Warner and his colleagues are only trying to mash up the party, they are trying to destabilise it, but no matter what they do they will not be successful.’

He added: ’If Mr Warner and Mr Maharaj had one ounce of decency, one iota of respect, they would resign their seats and fight a by-election to determine whether they are worthy of leadership or even members of Parliament and that they did not get there on the strength of the UNC.’

Both Warner and Maharaj have threatened legal action given the Executive’s decision to refer them to the disciplinary committee, which could lead to their suspension or expulsion from the party.

"they would resign their seats and see if they are worthy for re-election" Is there still anyone with enough intelligence to dress themselves that feels Panday himself is "worthy"?
No Worse Threat Than You Mr. Panday. Posted: 2009-08-16 11:38:00 PM
The only person that has and will continue to "mash-up" the UNC party is Mr. Panday. I think its about time he recognizes the need to retire as leader of the party and pave the way for fresh, new leadership. His stay as party leader will continue to drown the party as it has over the past years.
Infighting for scraps !! Posted: 2009-08-17 06:50:00 AM
What is all this ruckus about. A party that will never win the general election in its present state. Who do we vote for UNC or COP, the vote will always be split without unity , who is Mr.Panday fooling. When elections are due he will be an old man not fit to serve. What is he fighting for ? a Legacy for this family? It makes no sense to the voter as UNC will never win.
Who really believes Panday? Posted: 2009-08-17 10:39:00 AM
Panday has proven that he is the one that cannot be trusted. Ramesh and Jack are the ones that the people could depend on. Panday and his puppets are just jokers.
