Hunt: Weather, traffic fouled tickets delivery

The late delivery of tickets by the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation to the Ministry of Sport, which was compounded by the severe weather conditions prevailing at the time, accompanied by serious traffic congestion, led to the late delivery and non-receipt of football tickets by Government officials, Sport Minister Gary Hunt explained yesterday.

In this group were Diego Martin West MP Dr Keith Rowley and PoS Mayor Murchison Brown.

In an interview with the Express at his Abercromby Street, Port of Spain, office, Hunt said both Rowley and Brown were on the Government’s list of invitees to attend last Wednesday’s 2010 World Cup qualifying match between Trinidad and Tobago and El Salvador at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.

’Of course, Rowley’s name was on the list. He is a Government member and he is a person for whom I have high regard and respect,’ Hunt said, dismissing any suggestion that pettiness was the cause of Rowley’s non-receipt of an invitation.

Jack Warner told the Express last Wednesday that the invitation list sent by the Sports Ministry to TTFF last Tuesday at 4 p.m. did not include Rowley and Brown. Hunt explained yesterday however that the list sent to Warner was not the final list.

’It is rather unfortunate that Keith’s invitation was undelivered. I would have expected that Dr Rowley would have called (the ministry) and we would have made all the arrangements, as we did with Minister Peter Taylor, Minister (Neil) Parsanlal and other Government members who did not receive invitations,’ he said.

Hunt added that he attempted to call Rowley to ’clarify’ the issue, but Rowley was about to board a flight.

’He said ’the airplane is about to take off, we can’t speak now’,’ Hunt said, adding that he ’would give him a few days and then he would call him (again)’.

Warner told the Express last week that he had to provide Rowley, Brown, Opposition MPs and Independent Senators, with tickets and letters of apology, after he did not see their names on the list submitted by the Sports Minister.

But Hunt said yesterday that Government was never responsible for inviting Opposition MPs and Independent Senators. He said after Government refurbished the Hasely Crawford Stadium, it was decided that its allocation of 24 seats in the Minister’s box was inadequate. So under the new rental contract, it was agreed that Government would receive 172 seats. He said it was ’clearly articulated to the TTFF’ that these 172 seats were for Government officials.

He said ’in the spirit of collaboration’, and in order to facilitate the TTFF’s accounting procedures the Sports Ministry agreed to match the tickets and stickers provided by the TTFF, with the invitations sent out by Government. But he said the ministry however only received these tickets from the TTFF the day before the match, and even then the TTFF did not send the stickers, which forced the ministry to dispatch its driver to collect them.

’The next day there was rain, flood, traffic ... so that the end result was some invitations were delivered late, some not at all,’ Hunt said.

Will Call??? Posted: 2009-08-17 10:03:00 PM
Anybody ever heard of a little something called "Will Call"??? It's where you can pick up tickets at the venue Mr Hunt. Please tell me the National Stadium of Trinidad & Tobago has a Will Call window at one of the entrances. This will eliminate the lame delivery excuse given.
Lame Excuse Posted: 2009-08-18 00:33:00 AM
Mr. Hunt your explanation is to say the very least ..... LAME. You said and I quote "clearly articulated to the TTFF" that these 172 seats were for Government officials. Sir may I remind you that in EVERY democratic country the government is made up of the winning political party AND the opposition/independent MP's and senators. You have in a nutshell, spelled out for EVERYONE....the arrogance of the PNM ... and by the way I am a PNM member. How shameful and utterly disrespectful for you to say "Government was never responsible for inviting Opposition MPs and Independent Senators". It is not ONLY your responsibility but your duty and your respect to invite any and ALL members that make up our government. May I remind you sir that the PNM members of parliament are NOT the only members of government. I think you need to stop, as well as your other PNM colleagues, listening to your political leader Emperor Manning, and start listening to the people that voted your sorry self into power. Power .... that is the key word here .... PNM .... Power Not Managed. I feel ashamed to be associated with this party and ashamed of the mickey mouse politics of this once respected country. I live for the day to see harmony and responsibility come back to the halls of parliament and cabinet. Your arrogance and those of your leader and cohorts, is what makes chaos in a society. The crime numbers, the lack of any justifiable institution, any proper infrastructure speak for themselves. Mr. Hunt .... and to all the PNM stalwarts ...... this was a game that was supposed to unite our country in an event of sport, and YOU sir made it a political one. Jack boy, as much as I have my thoughts on you, I thank you and most of all the Express newspaper for keeping the public ... one that is in need of leadership at ALL levels ..... informed on these and other matters. Disgusted Trini.

Hay you people had the tickets well in advance before the rain and traffic so what is the problems now?
RE: Hunt Weather etc Posted: 2009-08-18 00:52:00 AM
Please tell us why did it take you soo long to respond to our question? It's alleged some names were not on 'ur list when it was presented. Now you're saying they were.Who is telling little Porkies then? We ant to know the truth for a change. Still Waiting! Footy Fan
tickets Posted: 2009-08-18 04:04:00 AM
Corrupt cops, escalating crime, poor health care, wanton disregard for the rule of law, abuse of the environment, no effective opposition, the economy on the brink and they are worried about tickets to a football game?
Weather, traffic fouled tickets delivery Posted: 2009-08-18 06:12:00 AM
Something smells foul ... what a lot of bold faced untruths. Minister Hunte has fallen into the trap of all politicians and seems to believe that he can fool all of the people - but this is only for a time.
Keith to sensitive Posted: 2009-08-18 06:44:00 AM
Well I am satisfied with this explanation. Mr. Hunt has defended his honour. Clearly there was no wrong doing. I can't understand why Dr. Keith Rowley could not pickup the phone and call his colleague. He pick up the phone and called Jack Warner though. Makes one wonder
Mountain out of a mole hill Posted: 2009-08-18 07:02:00 AM
In our small society when some people who have too much time on their hand usually find time to make insignificant things into an issue. I could not see the big point on this issue. Mr. Hunt have brought clarity this very small issue. A mountain out of a mole hill. As a society we have much more important issues to deal with.
Re: Mountain out of a mole hill Posted: 2009-08-18 2:10:00 PM
Have you ever heard "You can't see the forest for the trees"? This 'small' incident is like that tree...representing the whole warped, twisted forest that is the PNM.
Re: Mountain out of a mole hill Posted: 2009-08-18 2:11:00 PM
"Mr. Hunt have brought clarity this very small issue." lol what Mr Hunt brought is just more excuses for incompetence and greed to this tiny issue.
Re: Mountain out of a mole hill Posted: 2009-08-18 12:56:00 AM
What Hunt brought is not clarity but free tickets for the boyz.
Finally Posted: 2009-08-18 05:49:00 AM
Finally a comment from the Minister on this issue. Hmmm the PNM changing!! We getting explanations!! This is not normal for the PNM. Keep it up we like it
Re: Finally Posted: 2009-08-18 12:52:00 AM
This just sounds like justifications and excuses AGAIN. Traffic and weather? Within a few hours all the water run off and traffic and the country was moving and liming again. To me this and no excuse is the same thing.
Re: Finally Posted: 2009-08-18 2:12:00 PM
You call that an explanation! This is nothing. What about a proper explanation on what is happening to our CLICO dollars. What about an explanation on what is really behind the UDECOTT enquiry. What about an explanation as to who paid who and who owes who the money for the smelter plant. What about an explanation for all the money spent on fighting crime yet the murders keep going up and the crime detection goes down. What about these and other relevant explanations our people deserve. So please on an issue about tickets ... here's an explanation for you .... if they (PNM) playing games with football tickets .... imagine what else they doing with YOUR money. People let's vote them back in for another term of the same hardship it seems we want.
Even the Gods are being blamed Posted: 2009-08-18 06:26:00 AM
Total break down of such a simple task. Much less for severe and larger projects. Like everything else, an evaluation of who got tickets will never be accounted for.
Excuses excuses excuses Posted: 2009-08-18 08:04:00 AM
Talk about Hunt beating around the bush with this. First of all, Warner claimed the list was sent to TTFA the day before the match at 4pm. How efficient is this by the Ministry of sport. Secondly, why would Hunt say the list was not final. For heavens sake, it's the day before the match and the list was not final. Thirdly, rain, flood or bad weather is claimed for non or late delivery to G'ment officials, how come some get and others did not. Shame, shame shame on you Hunt. You are an embarassment to yourself and the Ministry of sports.
Yearite.. Posted: 2009-08-18 07:00:00 AM
I don't buy that story.....
Ah Love It. Posted: 2009-08-18 07:32:00 AM
It is the best explaination i have heard for years,Gary Hunt should be the minister of Information so when he provides information to the national community every one would understand. But Mr,Hunt how come Mr,Jack Waner was able to deliver in the same rain, traffic jam and flood and you with the state resources at your disposal could not do it.That is Management IMPOTENCE,i am suggesting that you take a good dose of management vigra or cialis.
Lame excuse Posted: 2009-08-18 07:33:00 AM
Don't you think that these people could have been informed to send a driver to collect the tickets. Somebody slipped up here . Sorry would do.
FOUL!! FOUL!! Posted: 2009-08-18 07:58:00 AM
This is what we call covering your goal!! This is the greatest defense we have ever seen. But , there is a double foul one that smells and one with intent. A lot to do about nothing !! A simple solution. "NO COMPLIMENTARY TICKET" . General public have to pay and even the youths, so why big men with position and Money cant pay. Get rid of the Old boys club and put them in the bleachers. Unfortunately no champagne and air conditioner there though !!
Which Hunt - the truth or not the truth Posted: 2009-08-18 08:07:00 AM
A very poor excuse indeed Mr. Minister. Traffic, weather; nothing new it seems only selectees were to receive tickets - petty.
Disappointment Posted: 2009-08-18 08:07:00 AM
It is unfortunate that the people who lead this country and demand respect from us behave in such an immature way. They are all jokers and don't deserve to lead this country ever again.
FLOOD, TRAFFIC...??? Posted: 2009-08-18 05:07:00 AM
this sound more lile an excuse from a school child than anything else...I can't believe a grown man could not come better than that...
Flimsy excuse Posted: 2009-08-18 05:29:00 AM
What is a little rain or flood. This is Trinidad and we are used to dealing with that sort of thing. That is a flimsy excuse and the exact problem with everything in Trinidad. A little rain and nobody can go to work or get any business done. In other countries rain or storm people are at their post. And Gary - you too boldfaced to demand so many free tickets. Think moderation next time. PNM - always want freeness the same way like their supporters.
Horse feathers! Posted: 2009-08-18 10:19:00 AM
I will believe Mr Hunt when I see feathers growing on horses'tails.
This is a cock and bull story Posted: 2009-08-18 11:14:00 AM
True football fans will endure anything for tickets to a match. Mr Hart needs to return the unused tickets and even reimburse Mr Warner as these tickets could have been sold. You have got to have some audacity to ask for 172 free tickets though.
Hahah... Posted: 2009-08-18 11:55:00 AM
But I bet Hunt's family and friends got theirs inspite of the weather and traffic!
MINISTERIAL INCOMPETENCE Posted: 2009-08-18 2:07:00 PM
Draft List - this was not the first match nor the first event - lists of officials are standard until resignations or firings - come again. Floods and Rains - I always wondered why government ministries were buying SUV's for their messangers to run around town, at last count there were about 4 in your ministry. Who's using them and for what? - Try again. Late Delivery - there is a thing in management known as contingency planning; it is meant to guard against the effect of Murphy's law. Did they not discuss this at the retreat when doing performance review and planning? - Now we know why the obvious to the general population is always a big surprise to those who are supposedly paid and appointed to lead.
Why is it!! Posted: 2009-08-18 3:44:00 PM
If the list was sent the day before the game... The tickets should be able to be picked up with a form of ID at a ticket bwindow in the stadium... That is how it is done in civilized countries... Then again civlized, & PNM don't belong in the same sentence
Minister Hunte - mea culpa Posted: 2009-08-18 3:40:00 PM
Minister, it took you a whole week to piece together this 'presentation' of yours. Could you not have sought the assistance of your brilliant Minister of Information, Mr. Parsanlal, in putting together this defense. He could have helped you rescue yourself. The Ind. Senators and the Opposition MPs ARE PART OF THIS GOVERNMENT. You state that you were "never responsible for inviting Opposition MPs and Independent Senators"? and might we add that you are 'not responsible for the people of T&T'. These 2 groups may not hold gold cards to the 'private members club' - the Cabinet, but they are part of our gov't - so don't play on words as it is not a pretty sight. We may have had inclement weather, but we still carry on with business as usual in T&T. We always do. Did you and those who made your way to the match not brave this very weather to get there. Yes, you may say that Mr. Rowley and the others were on your famous list, the usual excuses we hear, but what steps did you take to ensure they got their tickets, is the question. How obnoxious of you to say that the responsibility lies with Mr. Rowley to contact you for his ticket: As he is on the 'black list' of the PNM, you expect him to grovel in your 'honourable' presence. What a thought! Why would Mr. Manning need 172 tickets, for free. Shameful. What's this business of freebies for the men and women of plenty, who already get paid by the taxpayes, many of whom cannot even pay to get to the gates, muchless enter to enjoy the game. Mr Hunte, you would have been better off, keeping your mouth shut, as you have just put your foot into it. Can we ever expect our members in Parliament to function with integrity ? At this rate it may never happen in this lifetime.
Poor guy Posted: 2009-08-18 4:47:00 PM
Poor guy. Did the dog eat your homework too?
