UNC political leader Basdeo Panday will have to find a new location to meet the constituents of Jack Warner’s Chaguanas West electoral district.
The Chaguanas Borough Corporation yesterday voted to ban political party business from being conducted at any office belonging to the Corporation.
Panday had used the office of Chaguanas Deputy Mayor Orlando Nagessar in a building located opposite the Corporation’s headquarters to perform the job of surrogate MP.
Chaguanas Mayor Natasha Navas said a motion stating that no political party business would be allowed to operate in any offices of the Corporation was passed at a committee meeting yesterday.
Panday and Warner have fought an increasingly bitter battle, with Warner last week opening a shadow constituency office in Panday’s Couva North constituency.
Navas also said yesterday that contractors providing security at the market, cleaners and other administrators would be under closer scrutiny in the coming months.
She said that following a survey conducted at the Chaguanas market on Monday, it was found that 91 per cent of the 1,000-plus vendors do not want to be relocated from the present location.
She also found that 75 per cent wanted the removal of pavement vendors, 75 per cent found the facilities not acceptable, 80 per cent were unhappy with the market administration and 30 per cent complained of unclean surroundings.
Navas said: ’Security staff would be called to a meeting to discuss the concerns of the vendors regarding their safety.’
She said that the administrative staff have not been doing their jobs and would be closely monitored in the weeks ahead.
