...Bas: Money can't buy class

'not bothered': Basdeo Panday

As a battery of lawyers met yesterday to launch a legal battle against him, Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday declared he would not be terrorised.

’Nobody will terrorise me. That I can assure you of. I will not be terrorised. I am not made of that kind of metal. Some people may feel that money can buy everything, but money can’t buy class,’ Panday told the Express from New York yesterday.

He reiterated that he was not bothered by the legal actions Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner intends to take.

Panday and his wife, Oma, are currently in New York as guests of GOPIO to partake in that organisation’s 20th anniversary celebrations.

Yesterday, Warner held a high-powered legal meeting with British QC Allan Newman, together with attorneys Tabaquite MP Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj, Anand Ramlogan and Om Lalla.

Warner has threatened to take legal action against Panday.

He added, ’Let me tell you what is Mr Warner’s strategy, to get me into a running war with him, to have this in the papers every day so that he could fulfill his promise to the PNM to destabilise the UNC, but I won’t let him.’

Commenting on the move of Chaguanas Mayor Natasha Navas and members of the corporation, who moved a vote ensuring he could no longer use the office of Deputy Mayor Orlando Nagessar to meet Warner’s constituents, Panday said, ’God help this country if such people should ever get into power. My job is to attend to all the people of Trinidad and Tobago and I will find ways and means of doing so.’

Panday added that all the internal strife had also not dampened his spirit. ’I am not tired. I am here to serve the people and I have been doing that for a long time and I will continue to do so, and desperate men who are hungry for power will not stop me from doing my duty.’

Money Really Can't Buy Class Posted: 2009-08-20 08:35:00 AM
I am shocked that Mr. Panday knows that money can't buy class. I would not have guessed seeing that he has behaved so unseemingly in his political career, even when he was a Prime Minister. I remember clearly that Mr. Panday was the first public official to use words in public and on the Media that my mother told me I should never use. It was then that my admiration for his oratory prowess dwindled and so did my respect for him. In fact as I recalled some young people began saying: "if the Prime Minister is using these words, why can't I?" The sad thing is that when all this was happening, I was a teenager.... He then became, in my mind, a poor role model for our Nation's youth.
Panday's back is against the wall but he is still a mouther. Posted: 2009-08-20 07:54:00 AM
I would really like to see Panday pay for his big mouth, he like to talk to much and he now meets his match. Panday is now a very disrespected man in this country.
I would like to see Panday pay for his big talks. Posted: 2009-08-20 07:59:00 AM
One of the reasons Panday is such a hated man, is because his mouth and for that he should pay.
Pot calling the kettle black Posted: 2009-08-20 08:05:00 AM
Hahahaha....this coming from the biggest classless man in TnT. You right Bas, money can't buy class, and classlessness won't EVER get you the PM title EVER again...;)
Two things Posted: 2009-08-20 08:39:00 AM
Mr Panday: 1) It is true that 'money can't buy class' you, Warner, Manning et al haven't proven that. 2) You haven't served the people in a long time so don't use us as an excuse in your bid to keep power. Move along please.
Fight on Mr. Panday Posted: 2009-08-20 08:40:00 AM
They want you out and they are not in power as yet what will happen to the rest of us (if we are not in agreement with them) when they get into power...I am scared
Rare occasion that I agree with Panday.. Posted: 2009-08-20 09:58:00 AM
He is right, money cannot buy class. The irony and humour in the statement is that it applies to him also. I have always thought that Panday was a bacchanal politician. He will never be a statesman.
Money can't buy class Posted: 2009-08-20 08:43:00 AM
Who better to know this than Panday himself. With all that money in the English Bank, he still remains as one of the most if not the most "Classless" persons in T&T. I say it is about time that he should be taught a proper lesson. Go Jack Go.
Class?? Posted: 2009-08-20 08:52:00 AM
"Nobody will terrorise me. That I can assure you of. I will not be terrorised. I am not made of that kind of metal. Some people may feel that money can buy everything, but money can't buy class," Panday told the Express - Wow Mr Panday Spoken like a true ignorant.
Hungry for power and Class Posted: 2009-08-20 09:05:00 AM
Interestingly, Mr. Panday refers only to those who are hungry for power but he should also include those who choose to cling to power at all costs, even if it means the destruction of everything around them, including their very own legacy. Mr. Panday should also be careful about casting aspersions to the "class" of others as his past and current actions and statements leave no doubt about his very class or lack of it.
Class!! Posted: 2009-08-20 09:15:00 AM
If it could have, you Mr. Panday would have had some.
Paday - Gopio Posted: 2009-08-20 11:18:00 AM
Mr.Panday should be ashamed to be in New York to attend the Gopio Conference - since its the same Panday who sold out his people...Sugar Workers.. Shame on you Bas.
Re: Paday - Gopio Posted: 2009-08-20 1:52:00 PM
True and don't forget the Aranguez Farmers. He promised to fight for them, then left them so the gov't and the English 'Masser' to do what they will. Yet still...the same sugar workers and farmers support him. Sigh.
BASDEO PANDAY Posted: 2009-08-20 11:58:00 AM
The Silver Fox is at it again the man with the most fallouts. From Shah to Warner. Will someone be kind enough to publish all of the persons he fell out with.
What class? Posted: 2009-08-20 07:00:00 AM
Bas you must be dreamin, yuh trying to fit in a certain class all of a sudden.
AND I QUOTE....... Posted: 2009-08-20 11:07:00 AM
"desperate men who are hungry for power".....You must have been looking in the mirror when you made this statement!!! Ah Trini Too
It's you who lack class Posted: 2009-08-20 12:00:00 AM
Once I had faith in you. Today, you are a changed man, Mr. Panday. I see you as someone who cannot communicate with your team in order to resolve problems. It's your way or the highway. My friend and I are all Indians, but we are first Trinis, and we care about this country - not about race. Stop playing the race cards, it is for the weak minded and illiterate. Come better - we going with Jack. Ramish
Class is a proxy for ..... Posted: 2009-08-20 08:14:00 AM
Subhas Panday, Basdeo Panday's brother, was reported to have stated that Jack Warner may have the resources but "no class" in his fight with his brother and impending legal actions. Today, Basdeo Panday makes the same point. On both occasions, I have interpreted "no class" as a proxy (a thing used in place of another thing) for that popular primal refrain-"ole....." Dr. Oswald S. Warner (brother of Jack Warner)
