DON'T SUE BAS
Moves to get Jack to change his mind

received calls: Jack Warner

There are serious overtures being made to Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner by high-ranking people in the United National Congress (UNC), including two very senior parliamentarians and a top executive member, who have all appealed to him to desist from suing Panday.

Warner confirmed the overtures yesterday, saying: ’They (these persons) believe that a lawsuit would generally damage the party, but would really damage Panday personally. Therefore, they do not believe that it would be in the interest of either the party, Mr Panday and some ways even me, because at the end of the day, in this kind of situation nobody is a winner. We are all losers and that is what is guiding their actions.’

Warner, who met with his attorneys British QC Allan Newman and Om Lalla yesterday morning at his Concacaf office in Port of Spain for three hours, said since his announcement that he planned to sue Panday for defamation for statements made in a radio interview, which, according to Warner, suggested that he (Warner) was a drug lord, ’my colleagues have been calling’.

’Several calls were made to me by parliamentarians, high-ranking officials and office-holders, asking me to drop the lawsuit and try to find some mechanism whereby this thing could be resolved, and I have told them that I would consider it,’ he said.

Asked if the people making the approach were doing it on Panday’s behalf, Warner said: ’I never asked them, but I do not believe that they were acting on their own initiative.’

Sources said yesterday it was likely that Warner would put the matter on hold for the time being, and in the interest of the party and the representations made to him, postpone taking a decision on suing Panday without prejudice to his right to take action in the future.

Warner said he meets with his attorneys again today and after that, he may be in a position to make a firm decision. He reiterated, however, that this matter was giving him no pleasure.

’I continue to believe that Mr Panday had done a lot for the country, but I maintain that he has overstayed his time. I have no intention of doing anything to destroy his legacy. But I was offended over what he said. I remain open. And I would be guided tomorrow (today) by what the lawyers say,’ he said.

Asked if he would withdraw his suit if Panday were to say he was sorry, Warner said he did not want to put Panday in such a position.

’And in any event,’ he added, ’Mr Panday is the kind of person who would never say he is sorry for what he has said. Mr Panday never believes that he has erred. He always believes that he is right.’

Apart from Newman and Lalla, Warner said he had ’solicited advice’ from Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj and Anand Ramlogan.

Meanwhile, Newman, who represented Panday in an integrity case, said: ’I am aware of my professional obligations.’

He added that there was no conflict of interest.

Warner said he would be treating the issue of Panday’s statements separate from any legal action against the party’s disciplinary proceedings being contemplated against him (along with Maharaj and Winston Peters) and the matter of the suspension of three of his colleagues-Sylvester Ramquar, Rupert Griffith and Don Sylvester. He said he had a strong case on all the matters.

Sue him if that is what it takes to get him to leave town. It is because if his ego that this country is suffering the way it is. Mr Man realizes that he has no opposition and can do as he damn well pleases; for as long as he pleases, so long as Bas is at the helm. Chato
Don't Sue??? Posted: 2009-08-20 03:18:00 AM
I am not surprised that some UNC colleagues have approached you to drop the matter. Many of them do not have a political future without Mr. Panday, hence such a move. Mr. Warner, if the man said want he said as you allege and he refuses to make amends - sue him!!! It's as simple as that.

Warner sueing Ppanday Posted: 2009-08-20 04:59:00 AM
If Mr. Warner don't sue Panday, believe me he will be sued sooner or later, because Panday has an attitude of being very foul mouthed when he don't get things his way. this goes to show that the man is a dictator, but no one will let him know this, he has been ranting and raving about Jack and others, why didn't the party big wigs try and stop him from his rantings? now that Jack choose to be a man of class and fight him in the courts, they are all panicking. I say Jack stay your course of course of action. "don't change your mind".
Waiting for an excuse to cop out. Posted: 2009-08-20 04:43:00 AM
Reminds me of long ago when two boys on the verge of fighting, one of them most loudly will shout out "HOLD ME BACK,HOLD ME BACK BEFORE AH KILL HIM DEAD" but killing him is the farthest thing in his mind, What he really wants is to cop out from the fight. I wonder if Jack is following that boyhood experience.
Dances with the wolves Posted: 2009-08-20 06:39:00 AM
...this is all an elaborate dance which will end Jack's grand charge with a gentle back-pedaling coupled with a stern warning to the side-lined Bass...
Don't drop it, Jack Posted: 2009-08-20 03:35:00 AM
It is past overdue that Basdeo Panday be taught a lesson.Over the years, he has got away with several infelicities. He has never learnt his lesson and never will. He feels that he can do what he wants particularly when it comes to cutting down people, so it's about time that Panday learn the hard way. Forget about the UNC people who have been begging you to drop the matter. If you drop it, Basdeo Panday would continue to abuse and insult people. He will continue with his character assassination. Continue with the matter, Jack. It will be for Panday's good and the good of the country.
don't sue bas Posted: 2009-08-20 02:51:00 AM
I say is time somebody stand up to Mr. Basdeo Panday, he is a controller and the minute you stand up for your right you are victimized and chastised. When Jack was helping him in his time of need(legal expenses) he was not a druglord, when he was funding a loosing party(UNC)he was not a druglord, when he was supporting bas (personal expenses)he was not a druglord. But when Jack leaves the UNC for what he beleives is right and does what he thinks is right for the less fortunate. He is a druglord! I suggest that panday step down as opposition leader and jack drop the lawsuit and lets get things going the right way for a better Trinidad & Tobago.
don't sue Bas Posted: 2009-08-20 08:08:00 AM
If Warner were to back way how will this stop Bas from continuing to defame people when he knows that his colleagues in the UNC will try to mediate an easy way out. Nonsense!!! When persons seek and hold high office, expect to be respected as examplars they must face the consequences of their irresponsible actions. This is not the first time. Did he learn nothing from the first encounter with Ken Gordon.
While T&T burns... Posted: 2009-08-20 08:13:00 AM
They're stripping the petals off roses, "He loves me, he doesn't, he loves me...." The key to an effective democracy is a vibrant opposition that is always a looming and valid alternative to the party in power. That way, you get to vote out the party that has not acted in the people's best interest. T&T doesn't seem to presently have this.
Sue Him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Posted: 2009-08-20 08:25:00 AM
For too long Panday has been doing this to people and his has been getting away. It is time enough that someone answer him and teach him a lesson.
Quid pro quo! Posted: 2009-08-20 07:19:00 AM
Warner is looking for a quid pro quo. His self-exposed strategy is an attempt to get the UNC to drop its disciplinary charges in exchange for his court battle with Panday. The UNC membership would insist that the disciplinary charges should continue against Warner in order to get rid of this pseudo-UNC leader. syl
bas not gettin d message Posted: 2009-08-20 07:23:00 AM
Bas we love you and respect you for all you have done for the people of this country. but there comes a time when one need to realize they are doin more harm than good for those that want a UNC gov bak in power. Bas ride off into the sunset and give some new blood a chance.
Hold him accountable. Posted: 2009-08-20 07:58:00 AM
Don't back down Mr. Warner, Panday must be held accountable for his recklessness.
GO JACK! Posted: 2009-08-20 08:03:00 AM

The question remains what to do about Panday... Posted: 2009-08-20 10:04:00 AM
Something must be done about this man (Panday)...he is keeping back reconciliation, the party, the people. He knows that he cannot be PM so he settles for next best thing...leader of the Opposition.Tell him reconcile and if UNC/COP wins, offer him President.
Panday should shut up and tell his followers he's retiring Posted: 2009-08-20 05:32:00 AM
Panday lost a slander suit against Ken Gordon for calling Gordon a "pseudo-racist." He will probably lose the defamation case for implying that "Jack" Warner is a "drug lord." Panday needs to shut up. His constant foot-in-mouth is doing him and his party by extension a disservice. In recent years, his slowed speech has signalled, to me, a decline in the once focussed firebrand. Now, he just talks in the defensive with weak repartés about not being able to buy "class."
Why hesitate? Posted: 2009-08-20 10:01:00 AM
Mr. Warner should go for the jugular; because, be assured, that's what Mr. Panday will be doing. If his colleagues want to save him, then let them do so by asking him to step down from leadership - let him NOT contest the party elections.
SUE HIM,STEP DOWN PANDAY Posted: 2009-08-20 1:07:00 PM
Panday should apologize, but he won't,step down but he won't,unless he forced by his party.Still he has dreams of grandeur, which won't be.So.....go for it
