The Muslim holy month of Ramadan is expected to begin tomorrow across the globe.
Local Muslims have been advised to look for the new moon tonight, the 29th day of the Islamic month called Sha’baan.
First vice president of the Anjuman Sunnat Ul Jamaat Association (ASJA), Haji Kamal Hosein, said the month-long fast of Ramadan is a fundamental principle and a major doctrine of Islam that has been practised by millions of Muslims around the world for the past 14 centuries.
Ramadan, which has great spiritual and social benefits is the third principle of Islam and an obligation that was imposed upon Muslims not by man but by the creator himself, according to Hosein.
’Fasting not only teaches us to refrain from food and drink but to refrain from practices of society and all acts of immorality’, he said.
Ramadan is recognised through daily fasting by Muslims and nightly Taraweeh prayer, done only during this month-long fast.
It is also during Ramadan that the great night of spiritual upliftment known as Qadr night of Power is observed.
