BRONZE FOR TOBAGO
Josanne Lucas bags medal in World Championship women's 400 metres hurdles final

Josanne Lucas is now the First Lady of Trinidad and Tobago sport. The inauguration took place at the Olympic Stadium, here in Berlin, Germany, yesterday.

Lucas struck bronze in the World Championship women’s 400 metres hurdles final to reserve her own chapter in the T&T history books. The Tobago lass is the first female athlete from T&T to earn a medal at the global track and field meet.

’We did it,’ a relieved Lucas exclaimed after the race. ’I knew it was going to take a huge personal best.’

And she was equal to the task, completing her circuit of the bright blue track in 53.20 seconds, a new national record. The clocking was a full 78-hundredths of a second faster than her previous best - the short-lived 53.98 T&T standard she had established in Tuesday’s semi-final round.

Lucas was among the front-runners in the early stages of yesterday’s championship race. And when she turned into the home straight, the 2008 Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Championship gold medallist was locked in a close battle for bronze with American Tiffany Williams. But Lucas was stronger, driving to the line to secure third spot, behind Jamaican Olympic champion Melaine Walker, the gold medallist in 52.42 seconds, and American Lashinda Demus (52.96).

Walker’s clocking moved her into second spot on the all-time 400m hurdles performance list. Only world record holder Yuliya Pechenkina (52.34), of Russia, has gone faster.

Lucas, who is now the 17th fastest woman in history in the event, told the Express that yesterday’s run was her ’most technically sound race’ this season.

’I felt very relaxed from the beginning. My main goal was to stay focused and run my race-plan. I knew exactly what I had to do, and it came down to the last 100 metres - whoever wanted it the most.’

In the battle for bronze, Lucas wanted it more than Williams, the American fading into fifth spot in 53.83 seconds. Jamaica’s Kaliese Spencer clocked 53.56 to finish fourth.

Team T&T manager Dexter Voisin was excited about Lucas’ podium finish.

’When I had a team meeting this morning, I said ’normally as a manager I don’t predict medals, but I’m asking: Could I have a medal please?’ I looked at Josanne, and she looked at me, and I saw it in her eyes.’

Lucas said she always aims to deliver.

’My goal was to do my very best, and my best got a medal so that’s even better. I’m very happy. We have a very good management team, and a lot of support from the athletes and the Trinidad and Tobago crowd.’

Still recovering from her tremendous effort, Lucas said the significance of becoming T&T’s first ever female World Championship medallist had not yet sunk in.

’Maybe in a while, but I’m very, very, very, very pleased. Trinidad and Tobago had been supporting us athletes for a very long time, and it’s good to actually show something for that support.

’It’s not necessarily about being the first female medallist, but it’s always to go out there and represent the country very well, whether it’s to be a medallist or finalist or doing a personal best.’

The 25-year-old hurdler said the future of T&T track and field is very bright.

’The way these Championships are going, there’s a lot to look forward to. We have a very young team; we have a very talented team. Just continue supporting us and you’ll see the results.’

One of the young, talented T&T athletes here in Berlin, sprinter Kelly-Ann Baptiste, competed in the semi-final round of the women’s 200m, yesterday. Baptiste was fourth in the third and final heat in 22.96 seconds, and did not qualify for today’s championship race.

Congrats to you my dear Lucas and please keep the flag flying high for you are all ambassadors for the sport and country. However please change the headline. It should read Bronze for Trinidad & Tobago...one country until we say and do otherwise. You never hear Gold for Kingston but always Jamacia..lets be wise and sensetive of what gets printed please.

Congrats Posted: 2009-08-21 05:54:00 AM
Many congratulations go out to the First female athlete from T&T to get a medal in these international games. We salute you and I know that you are an example to other up and coming female athletes. On another note I did not appreciate the headline. When Richard Thompson won silver, did we say Trinidad gets silver. The headline, though I do not think it was done intentionally, it sends the wrong message and creates a divide between this beautiful twin island republic of ours.
Why no TV coverage? Posted: 2009-08-21 02:06:00 AM
M. Antonio from Canada writes: Congrats to Josanne and the team. Well done. Too bad and what a shame that the television stations in Trinidad did not think this event was worth live coverage. We had many talente athletes there and the country did not have an opportunity to see them perform. What a shame!

Bronze Posted: 2009-08-21 09:32:00 AM
Congratulations and May God Bless you. Most importantly give God the praise, and avoid the THA bright light pomp and ceremony when you return. Avoid the politicians as much as possible because anything they touch is spoilt later on. So express heartfelt thank you to those who have some sort of planned event for your attendance. Trust Me.
Bronze For Tobago Posted: 2009-08-21 08:21:00 AM
You are wrong. This was a bronze for Trinidad and Tobago! What an insult you have created for our twin island republic on the eve of the 47th anniversary of our independence. Even if the reporter from Germany was Tobagonian, and was trying to erase the ugly headline of two weeks ago, the Express should have corrected the headline. We are one in joy. We are one in adversity. We are one country moving forward, our Signal Hill Choir if singing internationally, is singing for Trinidad and Tobago. Dwight Yorke plays for both of us, so did Brian Lara; and Dr. Stephan Gift's research puts our one name on the map: Trinidad and Tobago. For the second time in a week, I say: "you go,girl", to a woman who has done something significant in our country.
So Proud Posted: 2009-08-21 04:27:00 AM
Congrats Josanne!!!!
Bronze to Tobago Posted: 2009-08-21 08:32:00 AM
Congrats to Josanne her family, coach and Trinidad & Tobago your hard work paid off. Canada
Congratulations Josanne Posted: 2009-08-21 08:40:00 AM
It'about time athletes in T&T get solid support for the talent they have. We have long waited for that.....because many good athletes in Trinbago did not get that solid support they nedeed to show off their talent (especially in my times). Way to go Josanne and Congratulations. Ex-Athlete

Help keep the country together Posted: 2009-08-21 06:26:00 AM
When people representing the twin island of Trinidad and Tobago do things that bring pride to the nation, it is foolish to focus on what specific island they are from. Tobago did not send a team to the World Games, neither did Trinidad. In fact, had Lucas won the event, no one would have played the Tobago anthem but the anthem of Trinidad and Tobago. There is enough division as it is in this country and for journalists to add to it is more than irresponsible. All the same, hearty congratulations to you, Josanne Lucas, for a great performance.
Jealous Trinis Posted: 2009-08-21 1:31:00 PM
What a bunch of jealous Trinis. I bet you all did not even know she existed before this but now you whining about a headline and wanting credit. Two weeks ago when the gruesome chopping took place you all weren't rushing to take credit for that... Tobago alone bore the brunt of the backlash and you Trinis were quick to cast blame as well. But NOW you want to be included? NOW you remember it's Trinidad AND Tobago? Steups.Sour grapes. GO TOBAGO GIRL!!
Re: Jealous Trinis Posted: 2009-08-21 3:20:00 PM
Where ignorance is Bliss it's folly to be wise. One Nation TRINIDAD & TOBAGO one PRIME MINISTER & A PRESIDENT. Stop and think be4 putting pen to paper. Trini Half / T'Bago Half.
Trinidad / Tobago Posted: 2009-08-21 2:00:00 PM
Nobody complains when soca or calypso artists reference only Trinidad. Why all of a sudden is it an "insult" to give kudos to our sister nation? We are a sister nation, if one is mentioned isn't the other a given already??
TWO Bronze "MADE BAGO PROUD Posted: 2009-08-21 10:53:00 AM
Great run Josanne and also Renny Quow, two pros from bago well done...Bamby..Canada
Bronze for Tobago Posted: 2009-08-21 5:17:00 PM
Trinidadians need to stop throwing stones at this title. If a poll was done internationally the results would show that "Trinis" in general refer to our country as "Trinidad" 99.99999% of the time. As a Tobagonian, I represent for Tobago 100%! This girl is from Tobago! Just like your "Trinidad and Tobago" heritage is understood when you say "Trinidad" to trace your roots it should be understood here as well. STEUPS!!!
